| The
Book of Common Prayer has long been translated into Italian, starting
in 1685. Translations of American BCP's date from 1868, and so include
translations both of the 1789 and 1892 editions. More recently,
a translation
of portions of the U. S. 1979 BCP was made for the use of American
churches in Italy.
This particular translation (produced in Philadelphia
in 1904), and others produced around this time, were all intended
for the use of Italian immigrants. Accordingly, their production
ceased after the restrictions in immigration starting in 1920.
This book was licensed for use in Pennsylvania,
and appears as 66:15 in David Griffiths' Bibliography of the
Book of Common Prayer. It appears to contain everything in
the 1892 BCP, including the Ordinal.
The text was translated by the Rev. Michele Zara, who was at the time rector of an Italian mission church, L’Emmanuello, located in the heart of Italian South Philadelphia at 1024 Christian St. Zara was originally ordained in the Roman Catholic Church, but left to join the Episcopal Church, serving as priest at L’Emmanuello from its founding in 1883 until 1906. He was succeeded by the Rev. Thomas E Della Cioppa, who created another Italian translation in 1922.
