Frequently Asked Questions
Anglicans Online! is a series of information screens, made freely
available on the Internet's World Wide Web, about the Anglican Church in
Canada and around the world. Here's a summary of the most often asked questions about
the "behind the scenes" details.
How did it start?
- I don't have a clue. [grin] It really started as my personal bookmark
hotlist of the few resources (four, I believe) on the Internet for Anglicans.
Eventually, it started to grow and I thought I'd put it up in the web directory
of where I work so that a couple of my friends can pick it up. Even then,
it was only about a half dozen or so sites, mostly in England. Then one
night, apparently overdosed on coffee, I posted a message about the site
on a Christian newsgroup. That week, Anglicans Online! recorded
about more than a thousand hits from all over the world. It just kind of
evolved from there.
How do I get my parish's web page listed?
- Read this.
How many visits do you get?
- A lot. Often more than 30,000 visits each week. In the first two weeks
of April 1995 alone, people from Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic,
Croatia, Japan, Singapore, and about 22 other countries visited the site.
I'm told by my Internet provider
that Anglicans Online! is the single most popular site on their
entire system. It's certainly the busiest Anglican/Episcopal site in the
world. (Yikes.)
How often do you update it?
- Every weekend, usually on Friday or Saturday night. I collect new sites
from people who e-mail me and save them to my hard disk until the next
time I update the pages. All together, it's about a 12-hour process for
myself and a friend each time we sit down to update it.
How much e-mail do you get from it?
- It varies, but on average it's about 40 messages per day. Although
I read all my e-mail daily, I usually save mail generated from Anglicans
Online! and reply on the weekend when I update the pages. (So please
don't be offended if you don't hear from me for a few days; I did get your
message and will reply.)
What do you do in "real life"?
- In real life, I am senior consultant for a new media consulting firm
in Vancouver, B.C.
No really. You must be a priest or something.
- Nope, really I promise. I'm just your average 26-year-old Schmo.
Where did you learn to design web pages?
- Mostly self-taught. Most World Wide Web browsers have a "view
source" menu option where you can peek in on the source code of cool
pages, so I tend to leech some ideas that way, but most of it is trial
and error. (P.S. Feel free to leech any code you find on Anglicans Online!)
What kind of computer and software do you use?
- [Geek mode on] I use a Pentium 75mhz tower, 2 gigabyte hard
drive (2,048 megs), a NEC MultiSync XV14 monitor, 3D Stereo surround sound,
quad-speed CD-ROM, 24 megs of RAM, a 14.4k faxmodem, a 28.8k faxmodem (yes,
two modems), built-in voicemail. It all runs on Windows 95. My Internet
connection is through a dial-up 28.8k link and my browser of choice is
Netscape Gold 3.0 beta 5. [Geek mode off]
I'd like to send you a postcard. How can I?
Great! I love to receive real mail to. My mailing address is:

What do you want to do when you grow up?
- Grow up?...
You must drink a lot of coffee.
- Now you're getting the picture. %-]
