THE ORDER OF THE
ADMINISTRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER,
OR HOLY COMMUNION.

If this special Form of Service is used upon S. Andrew’s Day, the Collect, Epistle and Gospel for the Day shall be said. Upon any other day, the following Collect, Epistle and Gospel shall be said; and one or more of the special Prayers may be said immediately before the Blessing.

THE COLLECT.

O Almighty and everlasting God, who didst give to Thine Apostles grace truly to believe and preach Thy Word: grant, we beseech Thee, unto Thy Church, to love that Word which they believed, and both to preach and receive the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Epistle—Acts i. 6-12.

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel: Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

The Gospel—S. Matthew xxviii. 16.

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

SPECIAL PRAYERS.

These Prayers following may be said at the Intercessions, or after the Third Collect at Morning or Evening Prayer, at the discretion of the Minister.

Prayer for Absent Friends.

O Lord our God, with whom is neither time nor space: we pray Thee hold in Thy safe keeping our dear ones, severed from us for awhile; and, though we meet no more on earth, grant to us all, that bound together in the fellowship of Thy holy Spirit, and the communion of Thy saints, we may surely meet in those eternal mansions which Thou hast prepared for them that love Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for the Bishops and Leaders of the Church in New Zealand.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst command Thy holy Apostles to make disciples of all nations: grant that the leaders of Thy Church may have a ready will to fulfil Thy charge, by seeking out, preparing and sending forth fit persons to preach Thy Gospel to the heathen; that by their efforts many may be gathered unto Thee, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit art one God, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer for Christian People Dwelling among the Heathen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast commanded us by Thine Apostles to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called, preserve our fellow-countrymen who sojourn in distant lands from the sin of offending Thy little ones who believe in Thee, and from causing Thy Name to be blasphemed among the heathen. Make them as the salt of the earth, and as a light in the world: that so beholding their good works, and won by their holy lives, multitudes may be turned to Thy truth, to glorify Thee who art our Saviour and our God, blessed for ever. Amen.

A Prayer for Peace and Unity.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst unto Thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you; regard not our sins, but the faith of Thy Church, and grant us that peace and unity which is agreeable to Thy will, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer for such as are Converted to the Faith of Christ.

Almighty God, who showest to them that be in error the light of Thy truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness: grant unto all them that are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s religion, that they may eschew those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Prayer for the Heathen and Others.

O Merciful God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that Thou hast made, nor wouldest the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live: Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Heretics, and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart and contempt of Thy Word; and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to Thy flock, that they maybe saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one Shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer for the Melanesian Mission.

Almighty God, for whom the Isles do wait, send down Thy blessing on the Bishop and Clergy of the Melanesian Mission, and on all who teach or are taught in its schools, that they may set forth Thy Name upon earth, Thy saving health among their people. Comfort them, O Lord, in every sorrow; protect them in every danger; strengthen them in every temptation, and give them such a sure trust and confidence in Thee, that they may serve Thee without fear. O Lord of the harvest, send forth Thy labourers into Thine harvest. Guide, by Thy Holy Spirit, those who are fitted for this work, that they may willingly offer themselves unto Thee, and by Thee may be enabled to set forth Thy glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for the Maori People.

Almighty God, in whom all peoples of the earth are one; have mercy upon the Maori people of this land. Be gracious to the heathen, and turn their hearts to Thee; recover those that are fallen from the faith; forgive the wrong that we have done to them, and bless the good that we have wrought among them; deliver them from the temptations of an alien life; and grant us to be fellow-citizens with them in Thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for the Missionary Clergy.

Most merciful Father, we beseech Thee to send upon Thy servants who preach the Gospel unto the heathen Thy heavenly blessing; that they may be clothed with righteousness, and that Thy Word, spoken by their mouths, may have such success that it may never be spoken in vain: Give them the spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind; strengthen them to endure hardness; and grant that both by their life and doctrine they may set forth Thy glory, and set forward the salvation of all men; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Almighty God and Heavenly Father: We glorify Thee, that Thou hast again fulfilled to us Thy gracious promise, that while the earth remaineth, seed-time and harvest shall not fail. We bless Thee for the kindly fruits of the earth. Teach us, we beseech Thee, to remember that it is not by bread alone that man doth live; and grant us evermore to feed on Him who is the true bread which cometh down from heaven, Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with Thee, O Father, and Thee, O Holy Ghost, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Or the Collect for the Twenty-fifth Sunday After Trinity.

Stir up, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the wills of Thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of Thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Grace, and Glory.

O Lord, we pray Thee, sow the seed of Thy Word in our hearts, and send down upon us Thy heavenly grace, that we may bring forth the fruits of the Spirit, and at the Great Day may be gathered by Thy holy Angels into Thy Garner; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Christian Missions.

O Almighty God, whose dearly beloved Son, after His resurrection from the dead, did send His Apostles into all the world to preach the Gospel to every creature: Hear us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and look upon the fields now white unto harvest; bless those labouring for Thee in distant lands, and prosper Thou their handiwork; send forth more labourers into Thy harvest to gather fruit unto life eternal; and grant us grace to labour with them in prayers and offering, that we, together with them, may rejoice before Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then a Prayer may be said for a joyful Resurrection, as follows:—

O merciful God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Resurrection and the Life: We meekly beseech Thee to raise us from the death of Sin unto the life of Righteousness, that when we shall depart this life, we may rest in Him; and that our mortal bodies, having been sown in weakness, may be raised in power; through the merits and mediation of Him who is the First-fruits of them that slept, and who died and was buried, and rose again for us, Jesus Christ Thy Son our Lord. Amen.

After the General Thanksgiving, which shall always be used on this occasion, shall be said the following:—

O most merciful Father, who of Thy gracious goodness hast heard the devout prayers of Thy Church, and hast granted us to gather in the kindly fruits of the earth in their season: We give Thee humble thanks for this Thy bounty, beseeching Thee to continue Thy loving-kindness towards us, that our land may yield her increase; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this

O Lord God of Hosts, who dwellest in the high and holy place, and yet hast respect unto the lowly; who makest Thy sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendest rain on the just and on the unjust; who by Thy mighty power dost order all things in heaven and earth: We yield Thee hearty thanks that Thou hast safely brought us to the- season of harvest, visiting the earth and blessing it, and crowning the year with Thy goodness; we praise Thee for the fruits of the ground which Thou hast bestowed upon us, filling our hearts with food and gladness. For these and all Thy mercies we laud and magnify Thy glorious Name; beseeching Thee to give unto us the increase of all spiritual gifts, the bright light of the Sun of Righteousness, and the dew of Thy heavenly blessing; and so plant us here in the House of the Lord, that we may flourish everlastingly in the courts of the House of our God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, now and for evermore. Amen.

THE ORDER OF THE
ADMINISTRATION OF THE LORD’S
SUPPER, OR HOLY COMMUNION.

Instead of the Collect for the Day, shall be used one of the Collects provided above for Morning and Evening Prayer.

THE EPISTLE. 1 Thess. v. 14 to 24.

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feeble-minded support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things: hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

THE GOSPEL. S. Matt. xiii. 36 to 44.

Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house; and His disciples came unto Him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; the field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares, are the children of the wicked one; the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Or S. John vi. 5 to 15.

When Jesus then lifted up His eyes, and saw a great company come unto Him, He saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this He said to prove him: for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto Him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes; but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves: and when He had given thanks, He distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of (he fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, He said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost- Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

AN ORDER FOR THE
BURIAL OF CHILDREN WHO HAVE
BEEN BAPTISED.

The Priest and Clerks meeting the Corpse at the entrance of the Churchyard, and going before it, either into the Church, or towards the Grave, shall say.

I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God; whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another.
We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the Name of the Lord.

After they are come into the Church, shall be read this Psalm following,

Dominus regit me. Psalm xxiii.

The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing.
He shall feed me in a green pasture: and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.
He shall convert my soul: and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for His Name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff comfort me.
Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me: Thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.
But Thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Then shall follow the Lesson.

Revelation xxi. 3.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying. Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write; for these words are true and faithful.

When they come to the Grave, while the Corpse is made ready to be laid into the earth, the Priest shall say:

Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live, and is full of misery. He cometh up, and is cut down, like a flower; he fleeth as it were a shadow, and never continueth in one stay.
In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for succour, but of Thee, O Lord, who for our sins art justly displeased?
Yet, O Lord God most holy, O Lord most mighty, O holy and most merciful Saviour, deliver us not into the bitter pains of eternal death.
Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts: shut not Thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, Thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall from Thee.

Then, while the earth shall be cast upon the Body by some standing by, the Priest shall say:

Forasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God of His great mercy to take unto Himself the soul of this our dear child here departed, we therefore commit his body to the ground: earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust: in sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change the body of our humiliation, that it may be like unto the body of His glory, according to the mighty working, whereby He is able to subdue all things to Himself.

Then the Priest shall say:

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name; Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

We commend into the hands of Thy mercy, most merciful Father, the soul of this Thy child departed; beseeching Thine infinite goodness to give us grace to live in Thy fear and love, and to die in Thy favour: that at the general Resurrection on the last day, we, together with him, may be found acceptable in Thy sight, and may hear these most comfortable words: Come to Me, ye blessed of My Father; possess the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. Grant this, we beseech Thee, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst take little children into Thine arms and bless them: Open our eyes, we beseech Thee, that we may perceive that Thou in very goodness hast taken this Thy child unto the everlasting arms of Thine infinite love; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
O God, the Fountain of life, whose ways are hidden and whose work is wonderful; who makest nothing in vain, and lovest that which Thou hast made: Comfort the souls of Thy servants, who by the early death of this Thy child are sorely smitten and bereaved; and grant that they may so love and serve Thee in this present life, that they, together with him may in the end obtain the fulness of Thy promise, and be clothed with the perfection of glory in Thy eternal kingdom; through the merits of Thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

SPECIAL FORM FOF THE
BURIAL OF THE DEAD

This Form of Service may be said in cases where the Office for the Burial of the dead may not be used.

After they are come to the grave, shall be said this Psalm following.

Psalm cxxx. De profundis

Out of the deep have I called unto Thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.
O let Thine ears consider well: the voice of my complaint.
If Thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss: O Lord, who may abide it?
For there is mercy with Thee: therefore shalt Thou be feared.
I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him: in his word is my trust.
My soul fleeth unto the Lord: before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch.
O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is plenteous redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel: from all his sins.

Then shall follow the Lesson:
Isaiah lv. 6, 7.

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found; call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God. for he will abundantly pardon.

While the Corpse is made ready to be laid into the earth, the Priest shall say:

Man that is born of a woman hath but a short time to live, and is full of misery. He cometh up, and is cut down, like a flower; he fleeth as it were a shadow, and never continueth in one stay.
In the midst of life we are in death: of whom may we seek for succour, but of Thee, O Lord, who for our sins art justly displeased.

Then when the Body is laid in the grave, the Priest shall say:

Remember not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our forefathers; neither take Thou vengeance of our sins: spare us, good Lord, spare Thy people, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy most precious blood, and be not angry with us for ever.

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.
O God, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive, receive our humble petitions; and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pitifulness of Thy great mercy loose us; for the honour of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate. Amen.
Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of Thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord. Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

XV.

FORM OF
BENEDICTION AT A GRAVE

To be used in an unconsecrated Burial Ground, before the body is laid in the Grave.

O God, our heavenly Father, who of Thine abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead: we beseech Thee to bless and sanctify this ground wherein we lay the body of our brother here departed; and grant Thy peace to all that wait for Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
