PRAYERS AND THANKSGIVINGS.

For the King and all in authority under him.

Let us pray for the King and all who are set in authority
under him.

The King shall rejoice in Thy strength, O Lord;
Exceeding glad shall he be of Thy salvation.

ALMIGHTY God, the fountain of all goodness, we humbly beseech Thee to bless our Sovereign Lord, King George, the Parliaments in all his dominions, and all who are set in authority under him; that they may order all things in wisdom, righteousness, and peace, to the honour of Thy holy Name, and the good of Thy Church and people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the British Empire.

Let us pray for the British Empire.

This God is our God for ever and ever;
He shall be our guide unto death.

ALMIGHTY God, Who rulest in the kingdom of men, and hast given to our Sovereign Lord, King George, a great dominion in all parts of the earth: Draw together, we pray Thee, in true fellowship the men of divers races, languages, and customs, who dwell therein, that, bearing one another’s burdens, and working together in brotherly concord, they may fulfil the purpose of Thy providence, and set forward Thy everlasting kingdom. Pardon, we beseech Thee, our sins and shortcomings: keep far from us all selfishness and pride; and give us grace to employ Thy good gifts of order and freedom to Thy glory and the welfare of mankind; through Jesus Christ Thy Son our Lord, to Whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost be all glory and dominion, world without end. Amen.

For the Clergy and People.

Let us pray for the Clergy and People.

Let Thy priests be clothed with righteousness;
And let Thy saints sing with joyfulness.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, Who alone workest great marvels: Send down upon our Bishops, and Clergy, and all Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful spirit of Thy grace; and that they may truly please Thee, pour upon them the continual dew of Thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Embertide.

Let us pray for them that are to be admitted into Holy Orders.

Let Thy priests be clothed with righteousness;
And let Thy Saints sing with joyfulness.

ALMIGHTY God, the giver of all good gifts, Who of Thy A divine providence hast appointed divers Orders in Thy Church: Give Thy grace, we humbly beseech Thee, to all those who are to be called to any office and administration in the same; and so replenish them with the truth of Thy doctrine, and endue them with innocency of life, that they may faithfully serve before Thee, to the glory of Thy great Name, and the benefit of Thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Church’s work among the Heathen.

Let us pray for the extension of Christ’s Kingdom throughout the world,

Declare His Name into the heathen;
And His wonders unto all people.

O GOD of all the nations of the earth, remember the multitudes of the heathen, who, though created in Thine image, are ignorant of Thy love: and, according to the propitiation of Thy Son Jesus Christ, grant that by the prayers and labours of Thy holy Church they may be delivered from all superstition and unbelief and brought to worship Thee; through Him Whom Thou hast sent to be our salvation, the Resurrection and the Life of all the faithful, the same Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or,

    Desire of Me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance;
    And the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession.

O GOD, Who hast made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on the face of the earth, and didst send Thy blessed Son Jesus Christ to preach peace to them that are afar off, and to them that are nigh: Grant that all the peoples of the world may feel after Thee and find Thee; and hasten, O Lord, the fulfilment of Thy promise, to pour out Thy Spirit upon all flesh; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Unity.

Let us pray for the unity of all Christian people.

Behold how good and joyful a thing it is, brethren;
To dwell together in unity.

O LORD Jesus Christ, Who didst say to Thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you Regard not our sins, but the faith of Thy Church, and grant it that peace and unity which is agreeable to Thy will: Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

For those preparing for Baptism.

Let us pray for those who are preparing for Baptism.

Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit,
He cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.

ALMIGHTY and merciful God, we pray Thee to look with mercy upon all those who seek Thy Holy Baptism. Give them true repentance and help them to see their sins. Make their belief strong in Thy Son Jesus Christ. Help them to learn Thy Will that they may be born again in the waters of Baptism and numbered among Thy true children, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those preparing for Confirmation.

Let us pray for those who are preparing for Confirmation.

Let Thy loving Spirit lead them forth;
Into the land of righteousness.

O GOD, Who through the teaching of Thy Son Jesus Christ didst prepare the disciples for the coming of the Comforter: Make ready, we beseech Thee, the hearts and minds of Thy servants who at this time are seeking the gift of the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands, that, drawing near with penitent and faithful hearts, they may be filled with the power of His divine indwelling; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Colleges and Schools.

Let us pray for all Colleges and Schools.

The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
And to depart from evil is understanding.

BE pleased, O Lord, to prosper with Thy blessing the work of all Colleges and Schools, that they who serve Thee therein, as teachers or learners, may set Thy holy will ever before them, and be led to the knowledge of Thy truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For those who travel by Sea.

Let us pray for all who travel by Sea.

These men see the works of the Lord;
And his wonders in the deep.

O ETERNAL Lord God, Who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea: Be pleased to receive into Thy protection all those who go down to the sea in ships, and occupy their business in great waters. Preserve them both in body and soul; prosper their labours with good success; in all time of danger be their defence, and bring them to the haven where they would be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rogationtide.

Let us pray for God’s blessing on the fruits of the earth and the labours of men.

The eyes of all wait upon Thee, O Lord;
And Thou givest them their food in its proper time.

BLESS, we pray Thee, O Lord, all those who work in the gardens or fish in the sea, that we may safely gather in the crops of the earth and the food of the waters; and grant to all planters and traders, and to alt those who sail in ships or work on plantations, that they may receive a fair reward of their work, and may praise Thee by living according to Thy will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Seasonable Weather.

Let us pray for seasonable weather.

The Lord will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him;
He also will hear their cry and will help them.

O GOD, heavenly Father, Who by Thy Son Jesus Christ hast promised to them that seek first Thy kingdom and Thy righteousness, all things necessary to their bodily sustenance: Send us, we beseech Thee, such seasonable weather that we may receive the fruits of the earth to our comfort, and to Thy honour; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Sick and Suffering.

Let us pray for the sick and suffering.

He healeth those that are broken in heart;
And giveth medicine to heal their sickness.

ALMIGHTY Father, giver of life and health: Look mercifully, we beseech Thee, on the sick and suffering, especially those for whom our prayers are desired, that by Thy blessing upon them and upon those who minister to them, they may be restored, if it be Thy gracious will, to health of body and mind, and give thanks to Thee in Thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For all sorts and conditions of men.

Let us pray for all men according to their needs.

The Lord is loving unto every man;
And his mercy is over all his works.

O GOD, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech Thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that Thou wouldest be pleased to make Thy ways known unto them, Thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for the good estate of the Catholick Church; that it may be so guided and governed by Thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to Thy fatherly goodness all those, who are any ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [especially those for whom our prayers are desired; ] that it may please Thee to comfort and relieve them, according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

For the Faithful Departed.

Let us remember before God the Faithful Departed.

The righteous live for evermore;
Their reward also is with the Lord.

O GOD of the spirits of all flesh, we praise and magnify Thy holy Name for all Thy servants who have finished their course in Thy faith and fear, for the Blessed Virgin Mary, for the holy Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, and Martyrs, and for all other Thy righteous servants, known to us or unknown; and we beseech Thee that, encouraged by their examples, and strengthened by their fellowship, we also may be found meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the Saints in light; through the merits of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or,

    Blessed are the dead, which die in the Lord;
    Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours.

O ALMIGHTY God, the God of the spirits of all flesh: Multiply, we beseech Thee, to those who rest in Jesus, the manifold blessings of Thy love, that the good work which Thou didst begin in them may be perfected unto the day of Jesus Christ. And of Thy mercy, O heavenly Father, vouchsafe that we, who now serve Thee here on earth, may at the last, together with them, be found meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the Saints in light: for the sake of the same Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

May the souls of the Faithful rest in peace;
And may light perpetual shine upon them.

A concluding Ascription of Praise.

TO God the Father, Who loved us, and made us accepted in the Beloved:
    To God the Son, Who loved us, and loosed us from our sins by His own Blood;
    To God the Holy Ghost, Who sheddeth the love of God abroad in our hearts:
    To the one true God be all love and all glory for time and for eternity. Amen.

REMEMBER, O Lord, what Thou hast wrought in us, and not what we deserve; and as Thou Last called us to Thy service, make us worthy of our calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O LORD, support us all the day, long of this troublous life, until the shades lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in Thy mercy, grant us safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CLEANSE us, O Lord, and keep us undefiled, that we may be amongst those blessed ones, who having washed their robes and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb, stand before Thy Throne, and serve Thee day and night in Thy holy temple; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O LORD, Who hast warned us that Thou wilt require much of those to whom much is given: grant that we, whose lot Thou hast cast in so goodly an heritage, may strive together the more abundantly by every appointed means, to extend the blessings of Thy kingdom, and, as we have entered into the labours of other men, so to labour that, in their turn, other men may enter into ours, to Thy glory and the fulfilling of Thy Holy Will, Who hast given to each one of us his charge to occupy till Thou comest, to Whom with the Father and the Holy Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

O LORD, our God, Who art in every place: from Whom no space or distance can ever separate us: we know that those who are absent from each other are still present with Thee, and we therefore pray Thee to have in Thy Holy keeping those dear ones from whom we are now separated. And grant that both they and we, by drawing nearer unto Thee, may be drawing nearer unto each other, bound together by the unseen chain of Thy love, in the Communion of Thy Spirit, and the Holy Fellowship of Thy Saints: that whether or not, according as seemeth best to Thy Divine Majesty, we meet together again here on earth, we may surely meet again at the Resurrection of the Just, and go in together to that House of many mansions which Thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Anima Christi.

SOUL of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, refresh me.
Water from the Side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O Good Jesu, hear me,
Within Thy Wounds hide me,
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee,
From the malicious enemy defend me,
In the hour of my death call me,
And bid me come to Thee,
That with Thy Saints I may praise Thee
For ever and ever. Amen.

    I believe Thou forgivest all sins of those who in loving repentance come to Thee.
    O LOVING GOD, I desire to love Thee more. I praise Thy Holy Name. Help me to reverence and adore Thee more deeply. Give me the power to love Thee more truly; for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

A Hymn of Love and Praise.

I HAVE a Friend whose faithful love
Is more than all the world to me;
’Tis higher than the heights above,
’Tis deeper than the sounding sea,
So old, so new, so tried, so true;
To-day as yesterday the same,
He loves me—Blessed be His Name.

He held the highest place above,
Adored by sons of flame,
Yet such His self-denying love,
He laid aside His Crown, and came
To seek the lost, at any cost
Of heavenly rank, and earthly fame,
He sought me—Blessed be His Name.

It was a lonely path He trod,
From every human soul apart,
Known only to Himself and God
Was the deep grief that filled His heart;
Yet from the track He turned not back
Till, where I lay in sin and shame,
He found me—Blessed be His Name.

A Prayer in Sickness.

LORD JESUS, be near me.
Lord Jesus, forgive my sins.
Lord Jesus, draw me near to Thee.
Lord Jesus, fill me with Thy love.
Lord Jesus, make me loving and patient.
Lord Jesus, keep me pure and clean.
Lord Jesus, strengthen me to bear my sickness.
Lord Jesus, give me the peace of Thy presence.
Lord Jesus, take my hand in thine.
Lord Jesus, help me to lie still in perfect trust of Thee.
Lord Jesus, heal me if it be for my good.
Lord Jesus, bless all those I love. Amen.

Prayers at Communion.

LORD, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.
Lord, come to us, that Thou mayest cleanse us.
Lord, come to us, that Thou mayest heal us.
Lord, come to us, that Thou mayest strengthen us.
And grant that having received Thee, we may never be separated from Thee by our sins, but may continue Thine for ever. Amen.

LORD JESUS, I adore Thee present in the Blessed Sacrament.
Lord, I believe Thou art infinitely near as I kneel in Thy Presence:
Lord, I believe that Thou lovest me; help me to have a greater love for Thee.
Lord, I come to Thee; give Thyself to me.
Lord Jesus, fill my heart with Thy purity and gentleness and love.

JESU, my Lord, I Thee adore,
O make me love Thee more and more.

A Prayer of S. Richard of Chichester.

O HOLY JESUS,
Most merciful Redeemer,
Friend and Brother,
May I know Thee more clearly,
Love Thee more dearly,
And follow Thee more nearly.

The Angelus.

THE ANGEL of the Lord declared unto Mary,
And she conceived by the Holy Ghost.
    Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
    Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord;
Be it unto the according to Thy Word.
    Hail, Mary . . .

And the Word was made Flesh,
And dwelt among us.
    Hail, Mary . . .

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God;
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

WE beseech Thee, O Lord, to pour Thy grace into our hearts; that as we have known the Incarnation of Thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an Angel, so by His Cross and Passion we may be brought unto the glory of His Resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
    MAY the Divine Assistance remain with us always, and may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

O SAVIOUR of the world, Who by Thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us;
Save us, and help us, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord.

The General Thanksgiving.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we Thine unworthy servants do give Thee most humble and hearty thanks for all Thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men; . . . . We bless Thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for Thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech Thee, give us that due sense of all Thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we skew forth Thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to Thy service, and by walking before Thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to Whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

APPENDIX.

A FORM OF PREPARATION
which may be said by the Priest and his Assistants
before the celebration of Holy Communion
.

Priest

IN the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
    Amen.
    I will go unto the altar of God.
    Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.
    Give sentence with me, O God, and defend my cause against the ungodly people: O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.
    For Thou art the God of my strength, why hast Thou put me from Thee? and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?
    O send out Thy light and Thy truth, that they may lead me and bring me unto Thy holy hill, and to Thy dwelling.
    And that I may go unto the Altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness, and upon the harp will I give thanks unto Thee, O God, my God.
    Why art thou so heavy, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me?
    O put thy trust in God, for I will yet give Him thanks, which is the help of my countenance, and my God.
    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
    As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
    I will go unto the altar of God.
    Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.
    Our help is in the Name of the Lord;
    Who hath made heaven and earth.
    I confess to God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, before the whole company of heaven, and you, my brother, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my own fault, through my own most grievous fault; wherefore I pray God to have mercy upon me and forgive me my sins, and you, brother, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
    May Almighty God have mercy upon thee, forgive thee thy sins, and bring thee to everlasting life.
    Amen.
    I confess to God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, before the whole company of heaven, and you, my father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my own fault, through my own most grievous fault; wherefore I pray God to have mercy upon me and forgive me my sins, and you, father, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
    May Almighty God have mercy upon thee, forgive thee thy sins, and bring thee to everlasting life.
    Amen.

    The Almighty and most merciful Lord, grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of all our sins.
    Amen.
    Wilt Thou not turn again and quicken us, O Lord?
    That Thy people may rejoice in Thee.
    O Lord, shew Thy mercy upon us;
    And grant us Thy salvation.
    Lord, hear our prayer.
    And let our cry come unto Thee.
    The Lord be with you.
    And with thy spirit.
