Before the 1892 Edition of the U. S. Book of Common Prayer, minor changes in the Book could be made by each General Convention. These changes were then reflected in the next "Standard Edition" of the Book of Common Prayer, to which all printings of the Book of Common Prayer were to be compared. Such Standard Editions were produced in 1793, 1822, 1832, 1838, 1845, and 1871. This is therefore the first such set of changes after the initial Standard of 1793. The changes made in these editions were mostly quite minor - typographic, slight rearrangements, etc. This particular edition is no different - changes made here include printing rubrics and the response "Amen" in Roman instead of italic type (in most cases), and others of a similar nature. It was also the first Standard Edition which included the Ordinal, Articles of Religion, Consecration of a Church and Institution of Ministers as an integral part of the Prayer Book. A summary of these changes is given by Frederick Gibson in The Standard Editions of the American Book of Common Prayer. This book is listed in David Griffiths' Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer as 1818/25, and is presented here as PDF graphics. There is extractable text "behind" the graphics, but that has not been proofread and undoubtedly contains errors. Bookmarks are included for navigation. Download: |
