Whoever gives unto the least of these

If you are looking for ways to serve God more intentionally, perhaps through devotion to prayer, acts of charity, and a simpler lifestyle, there are many others who feel the same way. The religious orders below accept oblates or lay members.

The Ecumenical Order of Charity was originally formed in Oxford, England in 1898 by Independent Catholic Bishop Vernon Herford. The order performs works of charity and strives toward ecumenism, non-violence, and universal citizenship. It currently has members in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin and overseas in Ghana and Nigeria representing Anglican, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Old Catholic, Religious Science and Roman Catholic denominations.

The Franciscan Web Page gives information about the orders founded by St. Francis of Assisi, whose members love and serve the poor and underprivileged and promote peace, justice, and ecology. A description of the orders (First, Second [Poor Clares], Third; Roman Catholic, Anglican, Ecumenical), history, contact information, news, publications, schools, events, and Web resources.

The Order of Port Royal, Priory of Jesus Christ the King. Priory Office, PO Box 199, Sunbury TW16 6PG, England. Also has locations in Great Britain, Germany, and Italy. The ministry of care and healing is central to the order's work. Re-established in 1962, its roots stretch back more than 300 years; it has a contemplative background and is currently under the authority of an independent catholic diocese. Members of the order are worker priests and people who serve the spiritual needs of the wider community.

The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. The Order of Saint John was founded in the late eleventh century and today is engaged principally in the field of health care. There are two great charitable foundations of the Order, the Ophthalmic Hospital of Saint John in Jerusalem and the Saint John Ambulance Brigade. There are priories in the USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other countries.
