Lord, teach us to pray
These groups hold conferences and seminars and publish literature to help people enrich their prayer lives. Sometimes the connections to healing prayer are explicit; sometimes subtle.
The Anglican Fellowship of Prayer. PO Box 31, Orlando, FL 32802-003. Telephone (407) 438-3166. Seeds planted through a 1950s prayer group led by Helen Shoemaker and Polly Wiley were nurtured by Bishop Austin Pardue, Pittsburgh; Bishop Frederick Wilkinson, Toronto; and Bishop Cuthbert Bardsley, Coventry. AFP sponsors an annual international conference; supports prayer conferences, retreats, workshops, and seminars (see their Web site for dates and locations); develops educational and other materials; mail order service for books and tapes on prayer (some deal specifically with healing). Although the organization is certifiably Anglican, much of its information is ecumenical and would be useful to anyone interested in deepening their prayer life.
Contemplative Ministries. Located in the Pacific Northwest, Bill Ryan and Sharon Cooper support churches, ecumenical ministries, and individuals involved and interested in contemplative spiritual practice through group and individual instruction. Bill is a mental health counselor, specializing in geriatric mental health, and teaches Centering Prayer in formation through Contemplative Outreach. Sharon is a diaconal minister in the United Methodist Church and has served in liturgy, music, religious education, spiritual formation, and retreat and small group ministries. She is active in the UM Congress of the Deaf. See their Web site for workshop dates and locations.
Contemplative Outreach, Ltd. National Office at P.O. Box 737, Butler, NJ 07405. Founded1984. Coordinates efforts among faith communities in the teaching and practice of Centering Prayer, a type of contemplative prayer in the tradition of Lectio Divina and based on The Cloud of Unknowing. Frs. William Menninger and Basil Pennington began teaching Centering Prayer in 1975 at the Trappist Monastery of St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts; among them, Fr. Thomas Keating, who has also written books on the subject.
Miracles of the Heart Ministries. PO Box 4034, Santa Clara, CA 95056. Telephone/Fax (408) 734-8663. Roman Catholic. From 1985 to 1990, Linda Schubert coauthored nine books with the Rev. Robert DeGrandis, SSJ. Her international bestseller Miracle Hour is a guide to prayer. She conducts workshops, retreats, days of prayer, and speaks at conferences. Calendar. Her site lists books, tapes, and resources for encouragement and support. She primarily serves through the charismatic Catholic renewal. Prayer, healing, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The World Community of Christian Meditation (WCCM) was founded by John Main, OSB, of Ealing Abbey, London. Like Contemplative Outreach (listed above), WCCM teaches contemplative prayer. The organization is currently under the direction of Laurence Freeman, OSB, of the Monastery of Christ the King in Cockfosters, London. The home page for the United States lists Christian Meditation Centers around the world, a book and tape catalog, links to articles, and newsletter archives. There are also home pages for WCCM groups in the UK, and in Australia.
