The Book of Common Prayer | |||||||

The Church of the Province of Central Africa includes dioceses in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This revised modern liturgy, published in English and Chichewa on facing pages in 1976, superseded earlier translations of the Book of Common Prayer. Chichewa, or Chewa (Chi here means language) is classified by Ethnologue as a dialect of the Bantu language Nyanja, or Chinyanja. It is the national language of Malawi. It is spoken by around 9,000,000 people, mostly in Malawi, but also in neighboring Zambia (where it is also an official language) and Mozambique. David Griffiths, in his Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer, lists 11 previous translations into Nyanja / Chewa; one of these (127:3, 1909) is online. The text is presented below in English and Chichewa in parallel, as it is in the original. Further information on Prayer Books and their translations for the Province of Central Africa may be found in a chapter by Titus Presler in the Oxford Guide to the Book of Common Prayer. This text was transcribed by Richard Mammana in 2011 from a copy of the 48-page bilingual pamphlet provided by Mother Miriam of the Community of St Mary in Greenwich, New York. |

FIRST EUCHARISTIC PRAYER It is not only right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places, to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord. For he is your living Word; through him you have created all things from the beginning, and formed us in your own image. Through him you have freed us from the slavery of sin, giving him to be born as man, to die upon the cross, and to rise again for us. Through him you have made us a people for your own possession, exalting him to your right hand on high, and sending upon us your holy and life-giving Spirit. Proper preface, if any, or else on Sundays, And now we give you thanks because today you have gathered us together at this eucharistic feast, so that we may be renewed in love, joy and peace. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, The people kneel. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ; and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood.

For in the same night that he was betrayed, he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Again, after supper he took the cup; he gave you thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” Let us acclaim the victory of Christ: Christ has died, Therefore, heavenly Father, with this bread and this cup we do this in remembrance of him: we celebrate and proclaim his perfect sacrifice made once for all upon the cross, his resurrection from the dead, and his ascension into heaven; and we look for his coming in glory. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love, and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power The services continues on page 17. |

THE SECOND EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Father, it is our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. He is the Word through whom you made the universe, the Saviour you sent to redeem us. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary. For our sake he opened his arms on the cross; he put an end to death and revealed the resurrection. In this he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. Proper preface, if any, or else on Sundays, And now we give you thanks because today is the first day of the week, when you bid us give you thanks for the resurrection of your Son, whereby sin is overcome and hope restored. And so we join the angels and the saints in proclaiming your glory as we say: Holy, holy, holy Lord, The people kneel. Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Before he was given up to death, a death he freely accepted, he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you.” When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said, “Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all men so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.” Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup. We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit. Lord, remember your Church throughout the world; make all of us in your family grow in love, together with ............... our archbishop, ............... our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again; bring them and all the departed into the light of your presence. Have mercy on us all; make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary, the virgin mother of God, with the apostles, and with all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages. May we praise you in union with them, and give you glory through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, with him, in him, |
