The Holy Eucharist: The Liturgy for the Proclamation of the Word of God and Celebration of the Holy Communion
Ukaristia Woyera: Mwambo Wakulengeza Mawu a Mulungu ndi Wakuchita Chiyanjano Choyera (1976)

The Church of the Province of Central Africa includes dioceses in Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This revised modern liturgy, published in English and Chichewa on facing pages in 1976, superseded earlier translations of the Book of Common Prayer.

Chichewa, or Chewa (Chi here means language) is classified by Ethnologue as a dialect of the Bantu language Nyanja, or Chinyanja. It is the national language of Malawi. It is spoken by around 9,000,000 people, mostly in Malawi, but also in neighboring Zambia (where it is also an official language) and Mozambique. David Griffiths, in his Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer, lists 11 previous translations into Nyanja / Chewa; one of these (127:3, 1909) is online. The text is presented below in English and Chichewa in parallel, as it is in the original.

Further information on Prayer Books and their translations for the Province of Central Africa may be found in a chapter by Titus Presler in the Oxford Guide to the Book of Common Prayer.

This text was transcribed by Richard Mammana in 2011 from a copy of the 48-page bilingual pamphlet provided by Mother Miriam of the Community of St Mary in Greenwich, New York.

THE HOLY EUCHARIST
The Liturgy for the Proclamation of the Word of God and Celebration of the Holy Communion

Greeting

At the entry of the ministers, the people stand and a hymn may be sung. The theme of the Eucharist is announced.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Praise

Praise the Lord.
Praise him you servants of the Lord.

You that stand in the house of the Lord:
Praise the name of the Lord.

The following may be omitted in Lent.

Glory to God in the highest
and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The preparation

My brothers and sisters, let us ask God’s help in preparing ourselves to celebrate the holy mysteries.

The people kneel.

Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hid;
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy Name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Penitence

At least on Ash Wednesday and the five Sundays following, the Ten Commandments are said.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Let us call to mind our sins.

Silence may be kept. Then is said,

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you,
and against our fellow men,
in thought, word, and deed,
in the evil we have done,
and in the good we have not done,
through ignorance, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life,
to the glory of your name. Amen.

The Priest or leader says,

Almighty God have mercy on us, pardon our sins and set us free from them, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness and keep us in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LALIKIRO

The Nicene Creed
is said at least on Sundays and other Festivals.

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven;
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The peace

The people stand.

Listen to the words of our Saviour Jesus Christ, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so are you to love one another. If there is this love among you, then all will know that you are my disciples.”

or

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace. If we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit.

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
Peace be with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

IF THERE IS A PRIEST the prayers continue on page 12

IF THERE IS NO PRIEST

The offertory

The alms are presented at the altar and the people say,

Yours Lord is the greatness,
the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty;
for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.
All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.

The thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks
for all your goodness and loving kindness to us and to all men.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And give us, we pray, such a sense of all your mercies
that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful,
and that we show forth your praise,
not only with our lips but in our lives,
by giving up ourselves to your service,
and by walking before you in holiness
and righteousness all our days;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

The people kneel.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

Eternal God and Father, you create us by your power and redeem us by your love. Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves in love and service to one another and to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore. Amen.

FIRST EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

It is not only right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places, to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord.

For he is your living Word; through him you have created all things from the beginning, and formed us in your own image.

Through him you have freed us from the slavery of sin, giving him to be born as man, to die upon the cross, and to rise again for us.

Through him you have made us a people for your own possession, exalting him to your right hand on high, and sending upon us your holy and life-giving Spirit.

Proper preface, if any, or else on Sundays,

And now we give you thanks because today you have gathered us together at this eucharistic feast, so that we may be renewed in love, joy and peace.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

The people kneel.

Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ; and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood.

Again, after supper he took the cup; he gave you thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Let us acclaim the victory of Christ:

Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come again!

Therefore, heavenly Father, with this bread and this cup we do this in remembrance of him: we celebrate and proclaim his perfect sacrifice made once for all upon the cross, his resurrection from the dead, and his ascension into heaven; and we look for his coming in glory.

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love, and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Through him, and with him, and in him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:

Blessing and honour and glory and power
be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

THE SECOND EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Father, it is our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

He is the Word through whom you made the universe, the Saviour you sent to redeem us. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary.

For our sake he opened his arms on the cross; he put an end to death and revealed the resurrection. In this he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people.

Proper preface, if any, or else on Sundays,

And now we give you thanks because today is the first day of the week, when you bid us give you thanks for the resurrection of your Son, whereby sin is overcome and hope restored.

And so we join the angels and the saints in proclaiming your glory as we say:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

The people kneel.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Before he was given up to death, a death he freely accepted, he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you.”

When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said, “Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all men so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.”

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free.
You are the Saviour of the world.

In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup. We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit.

Lord, remember your Church throughout the world; make all of us in your family grow in love, together with ...............  our archbishop, ............... our bishop, and all the clergy.

Remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again; bring them and all the departed into the light of your presence.

Have mercy on us all; make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary, the virgin mother of God, with the apostles, and with all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages. May we praise you in union with them, and give you glory through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through him, with him, in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honour is yours, almighty Father,
for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

As Christ has taught us we are bold to say

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

The communion

The priest breaks the consecrated bread, saying,

The bread which we break,
is it not a sharing of the body of Christ?
We who are many are one body,
for we all partake of the one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world: give us your peace.

or

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
grant us your peace.

Silence may be kept.

We do not presume to come to this your table,
merciful Lord,
trusting in our own righteousness,
but in your manifold and great mercies.
We are not worthy so much as to gather up
the crumbs under your table.
But you are the same Lord
whose nature is always to have mercy.
Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,
so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ,
and to drink his blood,
that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Draw near and receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for us, and his blood which he shed for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

The priest first receives the sacrament, after which it is given to the people,

The body of Christ (keep you in eternal life). Amen.
The blood of Christ (keep you in eternal life). Amen.

After the people have received, a period of silence may be kept.

Through him we offer you our souls and bodies
to be a living sacrifice.
Send us out
