COMPLINE

(Late evening)

Reader—

THE Lord Almighty give us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

BE alert, be on watch! For your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Be firm in your faith and resist him, for you know that your fellow believers in all the world are going through the same kind of sufferings.  1 Peter 5. 8, 9.

O God, make speed to save us,
    O Lord, make haste to help us.

    Glory to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit;
    As it was in the beginning, is now, and always shall be: for ever and ever. Amen.

Praise the Lord;
    Praise the Name of the Lord.

Then they shall sing or say one or more of these Psalms:

Ps. 4   Ps. 31.1-6.   Ps. 91.   Ps. 134.

THE SHORT LESSON.

LORD, you are with us and we are called by your Name. Do not leave us, O Lord, our God.   Jer. 14. 9.

Or.

COME to me, all of you who are tired from carrying your heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. The yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light.   Matt. 11. 28-30

Or.

GOD has raised from the dead our Lord Jesus, who is the Great Shepherd of the sheep because of his death, by which the eternal covenant Is sealed. May the God of peace provide you with every good thing you need in order to do his will, and may he, through Jesus Christ, do in us what pleases him. And to Christ be the glory for ever and ever! Amen.   Heb. 13. 20, 21.

Thanks be to God.

    Into your hands, O Lord, I give my spirit;
        Into your hands, O Lord, I give my spirit.

    For you have set me free, O Lord, you true God;
        I give my spirit.

    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit;

        Into your hands, O Lord, I give my spirit.

HYMN

BEFORE the ending of the day,
Creator of the world we pray,
That in your loving mercy you
Would be our guard and keeper too.

From evil dreams defend our sight,
From fears and fancies in the night;
Tread under foot our deadly foe,
That we no sinful thought may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;
And Holy Spirit, by whose breath
Our souls are raised to life from death. Amen.

Reader—

Shield me as a man shields his eye;
    Hide me under the shadow of your wings.

    Keep us, Lord, while we are awake, and shield us while we sleep, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

[NUNC DIMITTIS:]

S. Luke 2. 29.

LORD now let your servant go in peace: as you have promised him,
    2. For my eyes have seen your saving power: which you have prepared before the face of all people,
    3. A light to shine on the heathen: and to be the glory of your people Israel.
    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit;
    As it was in the beginning, is now, and always shall be: for ever and ever. Amen.

[THE APOSTLES’ CREED.]

I BELIEVE in God, the Father who rules over all, maker of heaven and earth,
    And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of the Virgin Mary, he suffered in the time of Pontius Pilate, was nailed to a cross, died and was buried. He went down to the world of the dead. On the third day he rose again from the dead, he went up to heaven and sits on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
    I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the fellowship of the Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the rising again of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

(All kneel)

Lord, have mercy on us.
    Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.

OUR FATHER in heaven, holy be your Name, your rule come, your will be done, in the world as it is in heaven. Give us this day our food for today. Forgive us what we do wrong as we forgive those who do wrong to us. Bring us not into trouble to try us, but save us from evil. For yours is the rule and the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Reader—

    Blessed are you, Lord God of our fathers;

    We praise and glorify you above all for ever.

    Let us bless the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit;
        Let us praise him, and call him great above all for ever.

    Blessed are you, Lord, in heaven above;
        We praise and glorify you above all for ever.

    The Almighty and most merciful Lord shield us and give us his blessing. Amen.

SILENCE

All together—

WE confess to God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and before the whole company of heaven, that we have sinned in what we have thought, said and done, through our own fault, and we pray God to have mercy on us.

GOD, you rule over all, have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins and save us from all evil, make us strong to do good and bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(If a priest is there, he shall stand up and say this absolution.)

MAY the merciful Lord forgive you, put away all your sins, give you time to mend your lives, and the grace and help of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Reader—

Will you not turn again and give us new life;
    That your people may be glad in you?

O Lord, show us your love;
    And give us your saving power.

O Lord, hear our prayer;
    And let our cry come to you.

Let us pray.

(Then shall the Reader say one or more of these prayer:.)

VISIT we pray you, Lord, this place, and drive from it all the traps of the enemy, let your holy angels make their home here to keep us in peace, and your blessing be on us for ever; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

SHINE on our darkness, we pray you, Lord, and by your great mercy keep us from all troubles and dangers of this night, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, at this evening hour you rested in the grave, and so made it a bed of hope to your people, make us so full of sorrow for our sins, which were the cause of your sufferings and death, that when our bodies lie in the ground our souls may live with you, who live and rule with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

LOOK down Lord, from your seat in heaven, shine on the darkness of this night with your brightness from above, and drive far from the sons of light what is done in the dark, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

BE with us, merciful God and keep us safe in the silent hours of this night, so that we who are tired with all the changes of this world that is passing away, may rest on you with whom no change can come; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

We will lie down in peace and take our rest;
    For it is only you, Lord, who keep us safe.

The Lord be with you;
And with you.

Let us bless the Lord;
Thanks be to God.

THE Almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit bless us and keep us sale for ever. Amen.
