BURIAL

    This is not to be used for a heathen, or one cut off from the Church, or one in the act of doing a great sin, or one killing himself.

    Note— The word sister should be used instead of brother if a woman is being buried, and the word her instead of him.
    The priest and those with him meet the body at the door of the church, and say one or more of these words—

I AM the rising again and the life, said the Lord, he that believes in me though he be dead, yet he shall live, and he who lives and believes in me shall never die. S. John 11. 25, 26.

    I know that my Saviour lives, and that he shall stand at the last on the earth. I shall see him for myself and my eyes shall see, and not another. Job 19. 25, 27.

    We brought nothing into this world, and it is sure we can take nothing out. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the Name of the Lord. 1 Tim. 6. 7. Job 1. 21.

    Let not your heart be sad, you believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many resting places; if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. S. John 14. 1, 2.

    The everlasting God is your safe home, and under you are the everlasting arms. Deut. 33. 27.

    Blessed are those that are sad, for they shall be comforted. S. Matt. 5. 4.

    Neither death nor life, nor angels, nor great ones, nor powers, nor things now with us nor things to come, nor what is high or low or anything else that has been made, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Rom. 8. 38, 39.

    If we live, we live to the Lord, or if we die, we die to the Lord, if we live or die we are the Lord’s. For Christ died and rose again to new life, that he might be the Lord of the dead and of the living. Rom. 14. 8, 9.

In Church

    O Saviour of the World, by your Cross and dear blood you have set us free;
    Save us and help us, we humbly pray you, O Lord.

    Psalm 23, or 39, or 90, or 103, or 116, or 130.

    Instead of ‘Glory be to the Father’ at the end of the Psalm they shall say—

    Give them eternal rest, O Lord, and let everlasting light shine on them.

Then the priest shall read one of the following as the Lesson

1 Cor. 15. 20-58, John 5. 24-29, John 6. 37-41, John 11. 21-27, 2 Cor. 4. 16-5. 4, 1 Thess. 4. 13-18, Rev. 7. 9-17, Rev. 21. 3-7.

Lord, have mercy on us.
    Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

OUR FATHER in heaven, holy be your Name, your rule come, your will be done, in the world as it is in heaven. Give us this day our food for today. Forgive us what we do wrong as we forgive those who do wrong to us. Bring us not into trouble to try us, but save us from evil. For yours is the rule and the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Do not judge your servant, O Lord;
    For in your sight shall no one be innocent.
Give him, O Lord, everlasting rest;
    And let everlasting light shine on him.
We truly expect to see the goodness of the Lord;
    In the land of the living.
O Lord, hear our prayer;
    And let our cry come to You.

Let us pray.

One, or more of these prayers shall be said here or at the grave.

ALMIGHTY GOD with you live the spirits of those who go from us in the Lord, and with you the souls of those who trust in you, after they are free from the troubles of the body, are in joy and happiness; we pray you that it may please you of your loving-kindness to fill up the number of those whom you have chosen and to bring quickly your rule, that we and all those who have died truly believing in your Holy Name may find our true end and joy in your everlasting glory, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

MERCIFUL God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the rising again and the life, in whom the believer shall live though he die, and he who lives and believes shall not die for ever, who also has taught us, by his holy apostle St. Paul, not to be sorry as men without hope for them who sleep in him; we humbly pray you, Father, to raise us up from the death of sin to the good life, that when we shall go out of this life we may rest in him, as our hope is this our brother does, and that at the rising again of all men at the last day, we may be thought fit in your sight to receive that blessing which your dear Son shall then give to all who love and fear you, saying, Come you blessed children of my Father, receive the home prepared for you from the beginning of the world; may this be ours, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Peacemaker and Saviour. Amen.

GIVE, we pray you, merciful Lord, to your people who trust in you forgiveness and peace, that they may be made clean from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Collects

LET us remember before God those who have died in faith.

Those who trust in the Lord live for ever;
    The Lord shall reward them.

GOD of the spirits of all men, we praise and glorify your great Name for all your servants who have finished their life on earth fearing and believing in you, for holy men and prophets of old times, for the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Apostles and Martyrs, and for all other true servants of yours known or not known by us, and we pray you that with courage from their examples, and strength from their friendship, we also may be found fit to share in the life of the saints in light, through the saving power of the life and death of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

    Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord;
        Yes, says the Spirit, for they rest from their work.

GOD, the God of the spirits of all men, we pray you to give freely to those who rest in Jesus the many blessings of your love, that the good work which you here began in them may be finished in the day of Jesus Christ. Kind Father in heaven, may we, who now serve you here on earth, be found fit at the last to share with them the life of the saints in light, through the same your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

For those in sorrow.

FATHER in Heaven, your blessed Son Jesus Christ wept at the grave of Lazarus his friend, look with pity, we pray you, on those who are now in sorrow and trouble. Merciful Lord, cheer and make glad their hearts, make them to know that all things lead to good for them that love you, and give them sure trust in the care and love of you their Father in Heaven, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

FATHER, we pray you for those we love, but see no more, give them your peace, and let everlasting light shine them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

2 Cor. 13. 14.

THE GRACE of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship with the Holy Spirit, be with us all for ever. Amen.

MAY the souls of those in Paradise, through the loving-kindness of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Any of these prayers may be said at the grave.

    When they come to the grave while the body is made ready the priest or he who is taking the service shall say—

MAN that is born of a woman has but a short time to live and is full of sorrow. He comes up and is cut down like a flower, he passes away like a shadow and can never stay.
    In the midst of life we are in death; from whom may we seek for help but from you, Lord, who for our sins are rightly angry with us?
    Yet, Lord God, most holy, Lord God most strong, holy and most merciful Saviour, let us not come into the bitter pains of everlasting death.
    You know, Lord, the secrets of our hearts, shut not your kind ears to our prayers, but save us, Lord most holy, God most strong, holy and merciful Saviour, most just judge eternal; let us not at our last hour, for any pains of death, fall from you.

Then while earth is thrown on the body by someone, he shall say—

YOU have taken into your hands, most merciful Father, the soul of this our brother who now has left us, and now we give his body to the ground, earth to earth, dust to dust, in most sure hope of the rising again in the last day, and the life of the time to come, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall make new the poor body of our life here, that it may be like his glorious body, who by his strong power shall bring all things to do his will.

Then shall he say—

I HEARD a voice from Heaven saying to me, Write, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord: True, says the Spirit, for they rest from their work.

2 Cor. 13. 14.

THE GRACE of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship with the Holy Spirit, be with us all for ever. Amen.

(If the weather is bad all may be said in the Church except the the giving of the body to the ground)
