FOREWORD

More than two years ago at the suggestion of a group of missionaries the House of Bishops of Nippon Seikōkai appointed a committee to prepare a Rōmaji edition of the Japanese Book of Common Prayer (Kitōsho). The manuscript is in the hands of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge but for several reasons it has not yet been possible to publish it, though it is hoped that eventually it may appear.

This present undertaking resulted from a suggestion made before the Olympic Games in Tokyo that an effort should be made to provide visitors with at least the main services in Rōmaji so that they might more easily follow what was said, when they worshipped in Japanese Churches. It differs from the project of the Rōmaji Prayer Book in that it is not an official publication and in the fact that all rubrics are in English in order to give maximum help to the stranger. Only the Daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer with the Eucharistic Liturgy are included but these should be enough for the occasional visitor. To have included the Psalter, the Collects, Epistles, and Gospels would have been desirable but it would have meant a much greater cost of production and, therefore, a much higher price for the product, which the probable demand would not justify. The editor assumes entire responsibility for the rubrics which are not always literal translations of the Japanese text.

In addition to being helpful to visitors to Japan it is possible that this publication may be of interest to liturgical students. A brief note, therefore, on pronunciation of the Japanese language is included so that, if desired, anyone might read the services aloud to appreciate the atmosphere and rhythm of worship in Japanese. This note also may help the visitor to take some part in the service.

The Japanese language has only five vowel sounds which are approximately the Italian sounds of the five vowels. However, in the syllables shi, su, and tsu the vowel is sometimes, not always, so lightly vocalised that it is hardly audible. E.g. Shishikisha is pronounced shish'kisha; Kirisuto, Kiris'to; futatsu, futats'. Consonants generally have the English sounds but the particle wo is an exception (pronounced o). In general there is very little syllabic stress in Japanese but it is usually recessive: i.e., it falls on the third syllable from the end of the word unless the final vowel is long. E.g. ta-ma'-e-ri but ta-mo'-o. Long vowels have approximately twice the value of single vowels. Double consonants must both be sounded: e.g. motte is pronounced mot-te.

The editor gratefully acknowledges the interest, advice, and encouragement of the Reverend K. E. Heim, D.D., reppresentative in Japan of the Executive Council of the American Episcopal Church. The publication has been made possible by a grant from the Church Missions Publishing Company of Hartford, Connecticut for which the editor here expresses his thanks.

Kenneth Abbott Viall, SSJE
former Assistant Bishop of Tokyo

As noted, this pamphlet was published at the time of the Tokyo Olympic Games, i. e., about 1964, primarily to help Western foreigners to be able to follow Japanese-language services. It is in Rōmaji, which is Japanese rendered in Roman letters, as opposed to the more normal Japanese or Chinese chraracters.

It does not appear in Griffiths' Bibliography of the Book of Comon Prayer (which tends to omit short works such as this); Griffiths also does not list the proposed complete Rōmaji BCP mentioned in the first paragraph, which strongly implies that it was never published.

SEISANSHIKI

(Holy Communion)

If a communicant desires to receive Holy Communion in a Parish other than the one to which he belongs, he must give notice to the celebrant.
If among those who come to receive Holy Communion there is anyone who has undoubtedly committed a grievous sin, or has injured his neighbour by word or deed, so that the congregaation is thereby offended, the Priest must admonish that person that he must not receive Holy Communion until he has repented of his sin, has made amendment for the harm he has done, or has definitely resolved to make amendment in the future, so that the congregation is no longer thereby offended.
Furthermore, if there are any in the congregation who bear malice toward one another, they are not to receive Holy Commmunion, in accordance with the above regulation. However, if one of them has clearly expressed his forgiveness of the harm that has been done to him, and his repentance for the harm he has done, and is seeking reconciliation, though the other will not acknowledge this and still persists in his ill-will, the Priest shall allow the one who is seeking reconciliation to come to Communion, but him who refuses reconciliation he shall not permit to communicate.
Whenever the Priest takes such action, he must inform the Bishop of the Diocese within two weeks of his reasons for so doing.

Those who have been confirmed should diligently receive Holy Communion, especially without fail during Eastertide. Moreover, it is the custom from ancient times that they should receive the Holy Communion before they break their fast on that day.
