EASTER DAY
THE EASTER ANTHEMS

CHRIST our passover is sacrificed for us: * therefore let us keep the feast;
Not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness; * but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.   1 Corinthians 5. 7

CHRIST being raised from the dead dieth no more; * death hath no more dominion over him.
For in that he died, he died unto sin once: * but in
that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Romans 6. 9

CHRIST is risen from the dead, * and become the first-fruits of them that slept.
For since by man came death, * by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam all die, * even so in Christ shall all be made alive.   1 Corinthians 15. 20

ADDITIONAL OFFERTORY SENTENCES, PROPER PREFACES AND PRAYERS BEFORE THE BLESSING

From ADVENT SUNDAY until CHRISTMAS EVE, save
when other provision is made

Offertory Sentence. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, thy King cometh unto thee.   Zechariah 9.9

Proper Preface. Because thou hast given salvation unto mankind through the coming of thy well-beloved Son in great humility, and by him wilt make all things new, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty to judge the world in righteousness. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer before the Blessing. Grant, O Almighty God, that as thy blessed Son Jesus Christ at his first Advent came to seek and to save that which was lost; so at his second and glorious appearing he may find in us the fruits of the salvation which he wrought; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Upon ASH WEDNESDAY and until the SATURDAY BEFORE PASSION SUNDAY, save when other provision is made

Offertory. Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and full of compassion.   Joel 2.13

Preface. Through Jesus Christ our Lord: Who for our sakes did fast forty days and forty nights, and was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin; So that we who are tempted may boldly withstand the devil, stedfast in our faith.
Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer. O God, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive: Receive our humble petitions; and though we be tied and bound with the chain of our sins, yet let the pitifulness of thy great mercy loose us; for the honour of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

From PASSION SUNDAY until the WEDNESDAY BEFORE EASTER, save when other provision is made on HOLY CROSS DAY and in Eucharists of the PASSION

Offertory. Thy rebuke hath broken my heart; I am full of heaviness: I looked for some to have pity on me, but there was no man, neither found I any to comfort me.   Psalm 69.20

Preface. Through Jesus Christ our Lord: Who being found in fashion as a man, humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross; That, being lifted up from the earth, he might draw all men unto himself. Therefore with
Angels, &c.

Prayer. O God, who didst will that thy Son should suffer death upon the Cross, that thou mightest deliver us from the snares of the enemy: Grant that by the merits of his death we may know the power of his resurrection; through the same Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Upon the ROGATION DAYS

Offertory. Verily, verily I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.   St. John 16.23

Prayer. O God, our heavenly Father, who by thy blessed Son hast taught us to ask of thee our daily bread: Increase, we beseech thee, the fruits of the earth by thy heavenly benediction, and grant that we, receiving with thankfulness the gifts of thy bounty, may use them to thy glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Upon ANY SUNDAY IN THE YEAR for which no other Proper Preface is appointed

Preface. Through Jesus Christ our Lord: Who on the first day of the week did rise from the dead, that we might live in him by the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore with Angels, &c.

On the EMBER DAYS and at ORDINATIONS

Offertory. The harvest is plenteous, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth labourers into his harvest.   St. Luke 10.2

Preface. Through Jesus Christ our Lord: According to whose most true promise the Holy Spirit came down from heaven, lighting upon the Apostles, to teach them and to lead them into all truth: Giving them boldness with fervent zeal constantly to preach the Gospel unto all nations; Whereby we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and true knowledge of thee and of thy Son Jesus Christ. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer (on Ember Days only). O thou Good Shepherd, who didst lay down thy life for thy sheep, and dost ever nourish them with the spiritual food of thy most precious Body and Blood: We pray thee to quicken with thy divine charity the hearts of those whom thou dost choose to be pastors of thy flock, that they may gladly use the gifts which thou hast given them in ministering to the salvation of thine elect servants, to thine eternal praise and glory; who, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, ever livest and reignest, one God, world without
end. Amen.

Upon the Festival of the PRESENTATION

Offertory. I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts.   Haggai 2.7

Preface. Because thy blessed Son, Jesus Christ our Lord was as at this time presented 10 the Temple; And revealed to thy servants as a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer. O God, who hast given thy Son to be the Light of the world: Mercifully grant that we, being enlightened by his grace in these holy Mysteries, may with thy faithful servant Simeon truly acknowledge the glory of the same thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Upon the Festival of the TRANSFIGURATION

Offertory. We all, with unveiled face reflecting as a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit.   2 Corinthians 3.18

Preface. Because the divine glory of the Incarnate Word shone forth upon the Holy Mount before the chosen witnesses of his Majesty: And thine own voice from heaven proclaimed thy beloved Son. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer. O God, who on the mount didst reveal to chosen witnesses thine only-begotten Son, wonderfully transfigured so that his face did. shine as the sun: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may be made worthy to behold the King in his beauty; who, with thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen.

Upon the Festival of CHRIST THE KING

Offertory. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever.   Revelation 11.15

Preface. Through thy most dearly beloved Son Jesus Christ our Lord: Who after his most glorious Resurrection manifestly appeared to all his Apostles: And in their sight ascended up into heaven to prepare a place for us; That where he is, thither we might also ascend, and reign with him in glory. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer. Almighty God, who hast set thy beloved Son at thy right hand to be our Priest and King: Grant that we thy servants, being refreshed by these thy heavenly gifts, may offer ourselves willingly for the service of thy kingdom; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Upon the Festivals of APOSTLES and EVANGELISTS out of Christmastide and Eastertide

Offertory. Go ye, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.   St Matthew 28.19

Preface. Through Jesus Christ our Lord: Who after that he was ascended up on high, and had led captivity captive, gave to his Church Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers; Whom he hath sent into all the world to preach his glorious and everlasting Gospel, himself working with them and confirming the Word by manifold signs and wonders. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer. Almighty God, who through thine Apostles and Evangelists didst teach the nations and enlighten them with thy truth: Grant that we, rejoicing in their communion and fellowship, may likewise be bold in the Spirit to spread abroad the knowledge of thy grace; through thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

UPON any SAINT'S DAY

Prayer. O God who hast brought us near to an innumerable company of Angels and to the spirits of just men made perfect: Grant us during our earthly pilgrimage to abide in their fellowship, and in our heavenly country to become partakers of their joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Upon the COMMEMORATION OF ALL SOULS, on the day of a Burial, or in Memory of the Departed

Offertory. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord: even so, saith the Spirit; for they rest from their labours.   Revelation 14.13

Preface. Through Jesus Christ our Lord: Who rose victorious from the grave and is become the firstfruits of them that sleep; And being himself the Resurrection and the Life, has made us glad with the hope of eternal life, and has bestowed upon us an inheritance incorruptible with his Saints. Therefore with Angels, &c.

Prayer. O eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life: We beseech thee to shed forth upon thy whole Church in Paradise and on earth the bright beams of thy heavenly comfort; and grant that we, following the good example of those who have loved and served thee here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into the fulness of thine unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BLESSINGS FOR PUBLIC USE
ON CERTAIN DAYS

THE FORM FOR
THE BLESSING OF CANDLES
on the Festival of
THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST IN THE TEMPLE

The Priest (who may be vested ill a cope) shall bless the candles, which may be placed on a table in the sanctuary, as follows.

The Lord be with you;
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Priest. Let us pray.

O ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, the Source and Giver of all light: We humbly thank thee that thou didst send forth into the world thine only begotten Son, the Prince of Glory, to be born of a pure Virgin according to the word of thy holy prophets, and to enlighten those who sat in darkness and the shadow of death. Grant that we, who today shall bear these candles to the praise of thy glory, may evermore rejoice in his unfailing and eternal light; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O GOD, who as on this day didst fulfil the desire of thy holy servant Simeon that he should not see death until he had seen thy Christ; and didst permit him to hold in his arms the world's salvation: We beseech thee to bless these candles to our use, so that, as we behold their outward light, our hearts may be enkindled with the fire of thy love. Grant, we pray thee, that all we who have been separated from the darkness of sin, may walk as children of light, and be found worthy to be presented before thee in the temple of thy glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O LORD, Holy Father, Almighty and everlasting God, whose blessed Son did mightily overthrow the powers of darkness, and has brought us into his kingdom of light: Vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to bless these candles to thy service. Mercifully hear the prayers of us thy servants, who desire reverently to bear them in our hands to the honour of thy holy name; and grant that we and all thy faithful people, abiding in his grace, may be fruitful in good works to the glory of thy name; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may the candles be sprinkled and censed. Then they shall be distributed to the congregation and lighted, after which a procession shall be formed. During the distribution, or during the procession, the following shall be sung:

Antiphon. A light to lighten the Gentiles: and the glory of thy people Israel.
Lord, now now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word.
    Antiphon. A light, &c.
For mine eyes have seen * thy salvation,
    Antiphon. A light, &c.
    Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all people;
    Antiphon. A light, &c.
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
    Antiphon. A light, &c.
Glory be to the Father, &c.
Antiphon. A light to lighten the Gentiles * and the glory of thy people Israel.

This service may be said before the Lord's Super on the Festival of the Presentation, or after the Second Lesson at Evensong.

During the Lord's Supper the candles may again be lit for the reading to the Gospel.

THE FORM FOR
THE BLESSING OF ASHES

ON ASH WEDNESDAY

Before the Lord's Supper ashes prepared from the palms blessed the previous Palm Sunday, or other suitable
ashes, may be blessed as follows :

The ashes shall be placed in a vessel near the holy Table; and the Priest, standing at the Epistle side, shall say,

The Lord be with you:
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Priest. Let us pray.

O GOD, our faithful Creator, who wouldest not the death of a sinner, but rather that he should turn from his wickedness, and live: Look with mercy upon the frailty of our mortal nature; and of thy goodness vouchsafe to bless these ashes which are now to be set upon our heads as a token of humility and of sorrow for our sins. We acknowledge that we are but dust and ashes, and that, by reason of our offences, unto dust we shall return; yet we beseech thy mercy to grant the forgiveness of all our sins and the pardon which thou hast promised to all who truly repent and believe in thy Son; who with thee and the Holy Spirit, liveth and reigneth, one God, world without end. Amen.

Here may the ashes be sprinkled and censed,

Then shall the Priest put ashes on his own forehead, or if there be another Priest present, he shall put the ashes on the officiant's forehead; after which the people shall kneel at the Communion rail and the Priest shall put the ashes on their foreheads. During the imposition Psalm 25 may be said or sung, or some suitable Lenten hymn may be sung.

The Priest shall say to each person, as the ashes are imposed:

Remember, O man, that dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Or

Remember that thou art a sinner, and repent.

THE FORM FOR
THE BLESSING OF PALMS
ON PALM SUNDAY

It is fitting that the Palms, made into the form of crosses, be laid ready on a table in the sanctuary.

As the Ministers enter, the following Introit may be said or sung.

GRANT, O Lord, that as we are baptized into the death of thy blessed Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, so by continual mortifying our corrupt affections we may be buried with him; and that through the grave, and gate of death, we may pass to our joyful resurrection; for his merits, who died, and was buried, and rose again for us, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or,

O MERCIFUL God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the resurrection and the life; in whom whosoever believeth shall live, though he die; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in him, shall not die eternally; who also hath taught us, by his holy Apostle Saint Paul, not to be sorry, as men without hope, for them that sleep in him: We meekly beseech thee, O Father, to raise us from the death of sin unto the life of righteousness; that, when we shall depart this life, we may rest in him, as our hope is this our brother doth; and that, at the general resurrection in the last day, we may be found acceptable in thy sight; and receive that blessing, which thy well-beloved Son shall then pronounce to all that love and fear thee, saying, Come, ye blessed children of my Father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. Grant this, we beseech thee, O merciful Father, through Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Redeemer. Amen.
