Sentences Préliminaires.

Quand le méchant se détournera de la méchanté qu’il a commise, et qu’il fera ce qui est juste et droit, il fera vivre son âme. Ezech. xviii. 27.
    Les sacrifices de Dieu sont l’esprit froissé; o Dieu tu ne méprises point l’esprit froissé et brisé. Ps. li. 16.
    Déchirez vos cœurs, et non pas vos vêtements, et retournez à l’éternel votre dieu: car il est miséricordieux et pitoyable, lent à la colère, et abondant en grâce. Joel ii. 13.
    Les compassions et les pardons sont du Seigneur notre Dieu, quoique nous nous sommes rebellés contre lui; et nous n’avons pas écouté la voix de l’Eternel notre Dieu, pour marcher dans ses lois qu’il a mises devant nous. Dan. ix. 9, 10.
    Je me leverai et m’en irai vers mon père, et je lui dirai, mon père, j’ai péché contre le ciel, et devant toi, et je ne suis plus digne d’être appelé ton fils. S. Luc. xv. 18, 19.
    Seigneur, n’entre point en jugement avec ton serviteurs; car aucun homme qui vit, ne sera justifié devant toi. Ps. cxliii. 2.
    Si nous disons que nous n’avons point de péché, nous nous séduisons nous-mêmes, et la vérité n’est point en nous; mais si nous confessons nos péchés, Dieu est fidèle et juste pour nous les pardonner, et pour nous purifier de toute iniquité. 1 John i. 8, 9.

¶ Exhortation.

Très-chers frères, l’écriture sainte, nous exhorte en plusieurs endroits, à reconnaître et à confesser la multitude de nos péchés et de nos iniquités; et elle nous avertit que nous ne devons point les dissimuler, ni les cacher devant la face de Dieu Tout-Puissant, notre père céleste; mais que nous devons les confesser d’un cœur humilié, soumis, contrit et obéissant, pour en obtenir la rémission par sa miséricorde infinie (et quoique nous devions toujours reconnaître et confesser avec humilité, nos péchés devant Dieu, nous y sommes particulièrement obligés, lorsque nous nous assemblons pour lui rendre grâces des grands bienfaits que nous avons reçus de sa main, pour annoncer ses louanges, pour écouter sa sainte parole, et pour lui demander les choses qui nous sont nécessaires tant pour le corps que pour l’âme.) C’est pourquoi je vous prie, vous tous qui êtes ici présents, de m’accompagner d’un cœur pur, et d’une voix humble, au trône de la grâce céleste,

Prefatory Sentences.

When the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed; and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. Ezek. xviii. 27.
    The sacrifices of God are, a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Ps. li. 17.
    Rend your hearts and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. Joel. II. 13.
    To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him: neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God to walk in his laws, which he set before us. Dan. IX. 9. 10.
    I will arise and go to my Father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. St. Luke. XV. 18, 19.
    Enter not into judgement with thy servants, O Lord, for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. Ps. CXLIII. 2.
    If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I. John 1. 8, 9.

¶ The Exhortation.

Dearly beloved brethren, the scripture moveth us in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God, our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent and obedient heart, to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy: (and altho we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God, yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hand; to set forth his most worthy praise; to hear his most holy word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body, as the soul;) Wherefor I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble voice, to the throne of the heavenly grace; saying after me,
 

Père Tout-Puissant et très-miséricordieux, nous nous sommes égarés et détournés de tes sentiers, comme des brebis perdus: nous avons trop suivi les imaginations et les désirs de nos cœurs: nous avons transgressé tes saints commandemens: nous n’avons pas fait ce que nous devions point faire: et il n’y a rien de parfait en nous: mais, toi, Seigneur, aye pitié de nous, misérables pécheurs: O Dieu, pardonne à ceux qui confessent leurs fautes: fais grâce à ceux qui se repentent: suivant tes promesses faites au genre humain, en Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur. Et accorde nous, O Père très-miséricordieux, nous te supplions, qu’à l’avenir nous puisson vivre sobrement, et religieusement; à la gloire de ton saint nom. Amen.

Dieu Tout-Puissant, Père de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, Créateur de toutes choses et juge de tous les hommes; nous reconnaissons et nous déplorons la multitude de nos péchés et des crimes que nous avons de tems en tems malheureusement commis, contre ta majesté divine, par nos pensées, par nos paroles et par nos actions. Provoquant très-justement ta colère et ton indignation contre nous. Nous sommes touchés d’une vive répentance et nous gémissons dans nos cœurs pour ces fautes que nous avons commises; le souvenir nous en est affligeant; la charge en est insupportable; aye pitié de nous, aye pitié de nous, o Père très-miséricordieux pardonne nous tout le passé; pour Jésus-Christ ton fils, notre Seigneur: et fais, par ta grâce, qu’à l’avenir nous te servions agréablement, par une vie toute nouvelle, à l’honneur et à la gloire de ton saint nom. Almighty and most merciful Father, We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep; We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts: We have offended against thy holy laws: We have left undone those things which we ought to have done: And we have done those things which we ought not to have done: And there is no health in us: But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders: spare thou them, O God, who confess their faults: restore thou them that are penitent; according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, we beseech thee, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy name. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus-Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men; we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed; by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine majesty; Provoking most justly, thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous to us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; through thy son, our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive us all that is past: and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee, in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy holy name. Amen.

¶ The Absolution, to be pronounced by the Priest standing; the People still kneeling.

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live; and hath given power and commandment to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins; he pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy gospel: Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance and his holy Spirit; that those things may please him which we do at this present, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last, we may come to his eternal joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who, of his great mercy, hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
 

Notre Père qui es aux cieux, ton nom soit sanctifié; ton règne vienne; ta volonté soit faite en la terre comme au ciel. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven: Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

¶ Then shall the Priest say,

O Lord, open thou our lips.
Answ. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
Priest. O God, make speed to save us.
Answ. O Lord, make haste to help us.

¶ Here all standing up, the Priest shall say,

    Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
    Answ. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Priest. Praise ye the Lord.
Answ. The Lord’s name be praised.

Ps. XVC.

    Venez, chantons à l’Eternel: poussons des sons de réjouissance au rocher de notre salut.
    Avançons-nous devant sa face, en lui présentant des louanges: jettons des son réjouissance, en chantant des pseaumes.
    Car l’Eternel est un grand Dieu: et un grand Roi, par-dessus tous les dieux.
    Les lieux les plus profonds de la terre sont en sa main: les montagnes les plus élévées lui appartiennent.
    C’est à lui qu’appartient la mer, car lui-même l’a faite: ce sont ses mains qui ont formé la terre.
    Venez, adorons; prosternons-nous: flêchissons les genoux devant l’Eternel qui nous a faits.
    Car il est notre Dieu: et nous somme le peuple de sa pâture, et les brebis de sa conduite.
    Aujourdhui [si vous écoutez sa voix] n’endurcissez point vos cœurs: comme à Mériba, comme au jour de la tentation au désert.
    Où vos pères m’ont tenté et éprouvé: et où ils ont aussi vu mes œuvres.
    J’ai été ennuyé de cette génération, pendant quarante ans: et j’ai dit c’est un peuple dont le cœur s’égare, et ils ne considèrent point mes œuvres.
    C’est pourquoi j’ai juré dans ma colère: il n’entreront point dans mon repos.
    Gloire soit au Père et au Fils, et au Saint Esprit;

    O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.
    Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving: and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms.
    For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
In his hands are all the depths of the earth: and the heights of the hills are his also.
    The sea is his, and he made it; and his hands formed the dry land.
    O come, let us worship and bow down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
    For he is the Lord our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
    To day, [if you will hear his voice] harden not your hearts as in Meribah: as in the day of temptation in the wilderness.
    Where your fathers tempted me: proved me, and saw my works.

Ps. XCVI.

    Chantez à l’Éternel un cantique nouveau: Que toute la terre chante à l’Éternel.
    Chantez à l’Éternel, bénissez son nom: annoncez de jour en jour sa délivrance.
    Racontez sa gloire parmis les Paiens: ses merveilles parmi tous les peuples.
    Car l’Éternel est grand et digne de louange: il est redoutable par dessus tous les dieux.
    Car tous les dieux des nations sont des idoles mais l’Éternel a faits les cieux.
    La majesté et la magnificence sont dans sa présence: la puissance et la beauté sont dans son sanctuaire.
    Familles des peuples, rendez à l’Éternel: rendez à l’Éternel la puissance et la gloire.
    Rendez à l’Éternel l’honneur dû à son nom: apportez l’offrande et entrez dans ses parvis.
    Prosternez-vous devant l’Éternel dans son sanctuaire magnifique: que toute la terre craigne dans sa présence.
    Annoncez parmi les nations que l’Éternel règne; vraiment il a établis la terre: elle ne sera pas ébraulée; il jugera les peuples avec justice.
    Que les cieux se réjouissent; que la terre s’égaie: que la mer, et ce qu’elle contient retentissent.
    Que les champs se réjouissent, et tout ce qui est en eux: que tous les arbres des forêts s’égayent au-devant de l’Éternel.
    Car il vient, car il vient, pour juger la terre: il jugera le monde en justice, et les peuples selon sa vérité.
    Gloire soit au Père et au Fils, et au Saint Esprit;
    Comme il était au commencement, comme il est maintenant, et comme il sera éternellement. Ainsi soit-il.
 

Ps. XCVI.

    O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord: all the earth.
    Sing unto the Lord, bless his name: shew forth his salvation from day to day.
    Declare his glory among the heathen: his wonders among all people.
    For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
    For all the gods of the heathen are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.
    Splendour and majesty are in his presence: Power and beauty are in his sanctuary.
    Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people: give unto the Lord strength.
    Give unto the Lord, the honour due unto his name: bring an offering and come into his courts.
    O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him all the earth.
    Tell it among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: verily he hath established the world so that it cannot be moved; he shall judge the people righteously.
    Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad: let the sea roar and the fulness thereof.
    Let the fields be joyful and all that is therein: let all the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord.
    For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people in his truth.

    Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur: et mon esprit se réjouit en Dieu mon Sauveur.

    My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit doth rejoice in God my Saviour.

Ps. XCVIII.

    Chantez à l’Éternel un cantique nouveau: car il a fait des choses merveuilleuses.
    Sa propre main, et le bras de sa sainteté: lui ont procuré la victoire.
    L’Éternel a fait connaître sa délivrance; il a déployé sa justice aux yeux des nations.

    Jetez des cris de réjouissance avec les trompettes: et avec le son du cornet, devant le Roi l’Éternel.
    Que la mer et tout ce qu’elle contient retentissent: la terre et ceux qui y habitent!
    Que les fleuves frappent des main! que les montagnes chantent aussi de joie, au-devant de l’Éternel: car il vient pour juger la terre.
    Il jugera le monde avec justice: et les peuples avec équité.
    Gloire soit au Père et au Fils, et au Saint Esprit;
    Comme il était au commencement, comme il est maintenant, et comme il sera éternellement. Ainsi soit-il.

Ps. XCVIII.

    O sing unto the Lord a new song: for he hath done marvellous things.
    With his own right hand, and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory.
    The Lord hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.
    He hath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Israel: and all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
    Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: break forth, rejoice and sing.
    Praise the Lord upon the harp: sing to the harp with a Psalm of thanksgiving.

    O Lord our heavenly Father, Almighty and Everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same by thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our actions may be ordered by their governance to do always what is righteous in thy sight, thro Jesus Christ our Lord. ¶ The second Collect is that appointed for the Sunday or Holy-day.

¶ The third Collect for Peace.

    O God, who art the author of Peace, and lover of Concord, in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom: Defend us, thy humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries, thro the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ The first and third Collects for the Afternoon service are these following.

¶ First Collect, for aid against all perils.

    Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord, and by thy great mercy, defend us from all perils and dangers of this night, through thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

¶ Third Collect at Evening Prayer.

    O God, give unto thy Servants, that peace, which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; thro Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

¶ Then shall follow a General Thanksgiving.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thy unworthy servants, do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and lovingkindness to us and to all men [especially to those who desire now to offer up their praises and thanksgivings for thy late mercies vouchsafed unto them] we bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory: and we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we may shew forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Almighty God, the Fountain of all goodness, we humbly beseech thee to bless the Queen, Maria Louisa, His Royal Highness, the Prince Royal, and all the Royal Family; Endue them with thy Holy Spirit; enrich them with thy heavenly graces; prosper them with all happiness; and bring them to thine everlasting kingdom; thro’ Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ A Prayer for the Clergy and People.

Almighty and Everlasting God, who alone workest great marvels, send down upon all Bishops and Curates, and all congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy grace: and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them, the continual dew of thy blessing: grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.

¶ A Prayer for all sorts and conditions of Men.

O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men, that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them; thy saving health unto all nations: more especially we pray for the good estate of the universal Church, that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians, may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith, in unity of Spirit, in the bond of peace and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness, all those who are any ways afflicted or distressed in mind, body, or estate; [especially those for whom our prayers are desired] that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities; giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions and this we beg through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
