The Book of Common Prayer | |||||||

Throughout the early 1900's there many proposals and much work undertaken to revise the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England. We present here one of these proposals, the work of the Rev. John Neale Dalton. Mr. Dalton is perhaps best remembered, not as a liturgist, but as chaplain to Queen Victoria and tutor of her two grandsons, one of whom was king when this book was published. The book is a moderate revision in some places and extensive in others, generally along Anglo-Catholic lines. For example, the Communion service is based on the Scottish and 1549 rites, provision is made for reserved sacrament in the Visitation of the Sick, and collects and scripture readings are added for many additional commemorations, including Transfiguration, many "Black Letter" saints, every Wednesday and many Fridays of the year, etc. The book is presented here as PDF graphics, and with extractable text "behind" the graphics. This text has not been proofread, and so will contain some errors. See the links at right to download or read all or parts of the book. This book appears as 1920:1 in David Griffiths' Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer. |
