The Book of Common Prayer in Kirundi (2012)

The Province of the Anglican Church of Burundi (Province de l’Église Anglicane du Burundi) grew out of the work of the Church Missionary Society in Eastern Africa beginning in the 1930s. A separate province in the Anglican Communion since 1992, the Anglican Church of Burundi includes seven dioceses in 2013, and about one tenth of the population of Burundi.

Kirundi (also called Rundi) is a Bantu language spoken by about 8 million people and is the first language of the great majority of people in Burundi, and additionally is the official language of that country. It is also spoken in adjacent parts of Tanzania, Congo, and Rwanda. It is very closely related to Kinyarwanda, the main language of Rwanda.

This Book of Common Prayer in Kirundi was published in 2012. David Griffiths identifies this language as “Rundi” (Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1549-1999 [London: The British Library; New Castle, Delaware: Oak Knoll Press, 2002]). He lists a 1960s liturgical publication in this language as 143:1, but does not provide bibliographic information about it.

This Kirundi Service Book is quite complete, omitting only the Psalter and lectionary texts. It is fairly similar in content to the US 1928 BCP, but also includes several additional services, as may be seen by the Table of Contents below. It is presented here as a single PDF file with bookmarks. English translations of the titles of the services are given below, as our very limited abilities allow. Corrections and additions are welcome.
