FOREWORD

JOHN WALMSLEY was present, near the end of his life, at a family party, at which the conversation turned upon collecting stamps, butterflies, and so forth. He looked at a little girl, and asked her, "What do you think a bishop collects?" The child replied at once, "Friends."

This book is written for his friends. It is just a simple attempt to preserve--through some of his letters and through the testimony of those who knew him well--the picture of a man who was very greatly beloved at every stage in his life.

My own share hi the work has been a very small one: only to arrange and bind together the material which has been so readily put into my hands by a number of my cousin's friends. I am much indebted to them all, and not least to W. H. Banks, Esq., of Hergest Croft, Kington, for the likeness which forms the frontispiece.

EDGAR G. WALMSLEY.
