The 1662 Book of Common Prayer in Spanish

 

The Book of Common Prayer was first translated into Spanish in 1623, in order to help along the proposed marriage of Prince Charles (later Charles I) and Princess Maria of Spain. Later translations had much more prosaic origins: likely for use by Spanish-speaking people in England and in English colonies, and for Anglican churches in Spanish-speaking countries.

The first translation of the 1662 BCP was made in 1707 and the last in 1864, although there were many printings of this final edition down to fairly recently. As with most other translations of the 1662 BCP, none of these were official. An early (1715) printing of the 1662 BCP in Spanish (Griffiths 162:3) is available from Google Books as PDF graphics.

The text used here is a 1923 printing of the 1864 translation published by the SPCK, and appears as 162:12 in David Griffiths' Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer. Accordingly, the prayers for the King refer to George V; this has not been updated. One will quickly see that the spelling in this edition is somewhat different from what is accepted today, primarily in the use of accents; this has also not been updated. Although the text has been spell-checked, I do not know Spanish, and so there are likely typos remaining. If you see any, please let me know.
