COMMON PRAYER

This Book is the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England (1662) revised in accordance with the common usage of the Anglican Church of Ghana, without prejudice to a revision (if undertaken) by the Church of the Province of West Africa. It was authorized for use in the Diocese of Accra by the Bishop on the First day of July in the Year of Our Lord One thousand nine hundred and sixty,

This small Book of Common Prayer from the Anglican Church of Ghana was most likely necessitated by Ghana's independence in 1957, which would have required replacement or removal of Prayers for the Queen. In addition, there were also a few changes in the Eucharist reflecting the Anglo-Catholic nature of the Diocese, as described in Modern Anglican Liturgies, 1958-1968, by Colin Buchanan:

"In Ghana (diocese of Accra) the tradition has always been Anglo-catholic, and the Accra Prayer Book (1960) reflects and standardizes this tradition, even if somewhat unusually as far as the eucharist is concerned. The whole 1662 rite is included in its original structure, but after the Sanctus comes Benedictus Qui Venit and a rubric which implies that the 'Western' canon is then said secretly as far as Quam Oblationem. This is followed by Humble Access and the Prayer of Consecration of 1662 aloud, and then (according to the rubric) comes the Unde et Memores to the end of the canon secretly (whilst the worshippers say secretly in English an anamnesis from [the 1929 Scottish BCP])."

Other than these minimal changes, and some additions to the Calendar, this BCP follows the 1662 almost exactly.

We also have the entire book available as PDF graphics (size=9.4MB). There is extractable text, but this text has not been proofread and undoubtedly contains errors. The PDF file omits Hymns Ancient and Modern, which is bound up with this book.
