I'd like to share a unique opportunity to see the other side of Mexico. The Weston Priory coordinates trips to Curnevaca, Mexico to see the other side of Mexican politics, culture, economics & poverty. You'll discover things spawned by American policy that are not publicized north of the border.
You fly into Mexico City where you are met by the Sisters of Our Lady of Guadalupe. After a night's rest in their convent you are given an escorted tour of the shrine where Mary appeared to a Mexican peasant. Then it's off to Curnevaca, about 60 miles outside of Mexico City to where the sisters have a retreat and conference center which will be your base of operations. You sleep in cottages equivalent to a medium class motel. Events include talks by local university instructors, politicians, & religious persons. There are many trips to visit people affected by the free trade act, religious sites and even Mayan city ruins.. Dates are March 1-10, 2011. Price of $800 includes escorts, transportation, room and food. You will also have to pay for your airfare to Mexico City. I went 2 years ago and now I'm eager to go back. For those in the Bay area, this is the same trip which was lead by the Rev Carol Hovis of the Marin Interfaith Council for many years. This is being organized by a woman from the San Prancisco peninsula. If interested contact AJ Modesti < serenitychiro at sbcglobal.net >
See below for more details. Ministers, please share this with your parishioners.
Blessings....John+

Subject: Messenger Article RE Upcoming Mexico Trip
Mexico Trip in March!
For the first nine years I attended this church I would intermittently hear people's glowing reports about the Cuernavaca Mexico Retreat. Mostly people would say that their life had been changed. So, in 2004 I took my first trip there. I wanted to see for myself - I wanted to have this experience. It is a Benedictine Retreat Center run by amazing Sisters who are loving, courageous, and work very hard for the poor. They are connected to the Brothers of Weston Priory in Vermont who make reservations and handle details for them. Their mission is to educate us "norteamericanos" about poverty in the world, to help us take a look with new eyes. Another part of their mission is to join with us in worship daily, showing us by their example how to devote your life to God, and how to have faith in the midst of great difficulties.
This trip was one of the best decisions I have ever made! The way I was changed by it is difficult to articulate. It was a spiritual deepening, it was a taking off of the blinders about the world economy. It awakened in me a deep responsibility to contribute in ways that I can.
That first trip I went by myself but immediately bonded with the other participants because we were having a meaningful experience together. Along with the meaningful, there was fun, there were excellent meals and neat individual rooms. Each of us recieves a message: Welcome Home!
So, here are the top ten reasons to consider going on the Mexico Retreat this year:
1. Learn the truth about the causes and consequences of poverty.
2. Learn about Mexico in particular from university professors.
3. Learn about the love and generosity of spirit in the colorful Mexican culture.
4. Experience fellowship and connection with other attendees.
5. Visit Aztec ruins and let the history of the region speak to your spirit.
6. You can practice your spanish -though english is spoken by several of the sisters.
7. Experience worship in another way that is beautiful, with indigenous influences.
8. Visit the Basilica in Mexico City and visit Tepayac, the historic spot of the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
9. Have excellent meals!
10. Find ways you are moved to help!
In closing, let me include the facts of this trip: The dates are March 1st-10th 2011. Our maximum group number is 20, with a minimum of 12. Right now 4 people have confirmed. The cost per person is $800- for 10 days (nine nights) meals and lodging as well as the program that the Sisters present. There will also be airfare which will probably run between $580-$700. We may be able to get a reduced rate for our group. Children are welcome as long as parents are with them at all times. There is no age restriction however some of the speakers' presentations may not be interesting to very young children. A deposit of $200-/person is due on September 1st. The balance will be paid in two 300- payments. There will be a limited amount of scholarship funds available - please see Kristi if you are interested and need financial assistance.
Lastly, you can learn more about the experience online by visiting http://www.westonpriory.org/mexico/index.html.
