<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Part of the Dioceses of Toamasina and Antananarivo in Madagascar have been destroyed by Cyclone Giovanna. The death toll, now at 31, continues to rise and the number of people homeless has reached
250,000.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;line-height:16.8pt">
<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">The local bishop sp0ke of a "desperate" situation, whilst the primate Most Rev Ian Ernest appealed to Anglicans worldwide to help those devastated by the disaster.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;line-height:16.8pt">
<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Bishop Jean Paul Solo tells us that the situation is increasingly desperate, many have no place to stay and schools and church buildings are badly affected. There is no provision of basics such
as drinking water or electricity. There is also fear about the possible outbreak of waterborne diseases.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;line-height:16.8pt">
<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">Rain and wind have caused significant damage to public infrastructure and telecommunications services. Storms also cut off communication with rural areas and blocked major roads making it difficult
for authorities to reach those affected.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;line-height:16.8pt">
<span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">The Most Revd Ian Ernest of the Province of the Indian Ocean said: “It is sad that Madagascar had been hit again by a cyclone, we already know they are facing political instability and uncertainty.
I make an appeal, so that a spirit of solidarity can transcend the ocean and I invite you to pray with us and for us. Your generosity enables the afflicted to get back to their living and to a better quality of life.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
