Both were awarded for their work in improving the lives of Rwandan children. (PPU photo). ? Ms. Caryl Stern, President of the US Fund for UNICEF; ? Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick and First Lady Diane Patrick; ? Ms. Kristen Mangelinkx, New England Regional Director  of the US Fund for UNICEF; ? Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen:   Let me first of all thank you very much, Caryl Stern, for your kind introduction ? and for graciously inviting my wife Jeannette and I for tonight?s wonderful event in support of Rwandan children, in this historic State House. I wish to acknowledge the Governor of Massachusetts, Honourable Deval Patrick and First Lady Diane Patrick for being here with us, and also to appreciate the US Fund for UNICEF New England Board co-chairs, Kaia Miller and Jonathan Goldstein ? two very good friends of Rwanda ? for their efforts in making this evening a success. My wife and I are deeply humbled by the award presented to us tonight by the US Fund for UNICEF and accept this honour on behalf of the hardworking people of my country, Rwanda. Before I proceed, permit me to share something with you about the group of young girls who performed for us a few moments ago alongside their friends from the Boston Children?s Chorus. I was delighted to see these groups of children sing together although they live thousands of miles apart. On April 7th of this year, Rwanda commemorated fifteen years since the 1994 genocide. At this time, when ? understandably ? sorrow settles quite heavily across the country, these children we heard tonight sang songs to us ? of hope and courage well beyond their years. Songs that embodied the spirit of Rwanda?s resilience. In essence, these children ? and their peers back home ? continue to inspire us to push against sometimes seemingly overwhelming odds to build the country they deserve, and they are the reason Rwanda will prosper. So once again, I thank you tonight for your generosity in acknowledging our modest achievements in promoting the welfare of Rwanda?s children ? as I believe we can all see, championing these children is one of the best things we can do for our country. ? Distinguished guests: Over the last fifteen years we in Rwanda have worked and continue to work diligently to build a united and prosperous country relying on the participation and innovative efforts of all Rwandans. Improving the lives of Rwandan children has been central to our growth and development agenda. Progress in this regard includes reaching ninety-six percent enrolment for the first nine years of education, which is now tuition-free in Rwanda. One of the reasons behind this accomplishment is the quality of partnerships we have developed with our many friends and colleagues ? and their institutions and agencies. We have a simple definition for a ?good partner?. A good partner supports programs that we Rwandans have conceived, and works with us on effective implementation aimed at improving lives and creating greater prosperity. Indeed, a good development partner?s success is tied to its client?s own success. We are pleased to count UNICEF and its team based in our country among our good partners. Let me illustrate this with two examples, namely the Child-Friendly School Model and provision of meals to learners program ? two exemplary initiatives that we have worked on with UNICEF-Rwanda. The Child-Friendly School Model focuses on the overall wellbeing of the child, including health and nutrition. This approach also incorporates the circumstances of classroom and school infrastructure as well as the conditions of the children?s teachers, families, and their communities. The impact of this holistic model has been remarkable, as demonstrated by higher enrolment and retention rates, and rehabilitated school infrastructure ? as well as improved capabilities of families in terms of income-generation activities that in turn support their children?s education. We look forward to duplicating this model extensively throughout the country. Rather than accepting free food for supported schools that would not only breed dependency, but also distort local market prices and put our farmers at a distinct disadvantage, we have worked with UNICEF-Rwanda on empowering initiatives that include purchasing food from communities in which schools are located and having children grow some of their own food in school gardens. It has been rewarding to work with institutions that share our belief that no country is destined to stay impoverished, diseased and illiterate forever ? and that all nations and regions of the world have the potential to graduate to a socioeconomic situation that no longer requires aid, charity or pity. While that day may not yet have arrived, I am confident that the building blocks we are putting in place are preparing us to achieve our country?s vision of attaining middle income status by the year 2020. The cornerstone of our strategy for building a new nation and achieving greater prosperity is serious and sustained investment in human capital. Focusing on our children and youth is fundamental to realize these goals ? and our approach must be holistic to ensure that our young people are healthy, educated, and well equipped to face the challenges and seize the opportunities of the twenty-first century. In Rwanda, and in fact, throughout Africa, we recognize that our prosperity will come from thriving businesses ? led by entrepreneurs who have been adequately prepared in their childhood and youth. We are shaping our curricula and other programs for children to reflect this for maximum impact. ? Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen ? Dear friends In conclusion, let me take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation to the US Fund for UNICEF and UNICEF-Rwanda for recognizing Rwanda?s efforts to create a conducive environment in which our children can grow into productive citizens and contribute to their own success and that of their communities and their nation. We look forward to continued partnership that is stronger and even more innovative. To all of you present tonight, your friendship, support and belief in a bright future for Rwanda is of great value to us.  If you have not yet visited our country, I take the pleasure of welcoming you to do so and see for yourselves the fruits of this partnership, and the many other developments that offer the promise that our children sing so eloquently about. The election took place on Saturday 13 at the Anglican Diocese of Kigali. The Bishops who were elected are: The Rev. DR. Todd Hunter, The Rev. Canon Doc Loomis and Rev. Silas TAK Yin Ng. According to the communiqué the first two bishops will serve in US while one Silas TAK Yin Ng will serve in Canada. The province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda has increased the number of bishops in the Anglican Mission in the Americas (AMIA) from seven to ten. The Anglican Mission in the Americas was formed on July, 28, 2000 after this segment broke away from the Episcopal Church of America (ECUSA). The world fellowship has been in an uproar since the liberal-leaning U.S. Episcopal Church, which is the Anglican body in the U.S.A, consecrated its first openly gay bishop, V. Gene.Robinson of New Hampshire. As a result, Rwandan bishops oversee some Anglican dioceses in North America. On his part, the Primate of the Church of Rwanda, Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini vowed that Rwanda will continue spreading a message of hope in an attempt to save mankind from falling into satanic pit.    In his message to the Press, Bishop Charles Murphy, the Chairman of AMIA and the Primatial Vicar from America lauded Rwanda for what it has done for his province.  ?Rwanda is a beacon of hope. It has saved Americans from a state of quagmire,? said, Murphy, and added: ?Our churches in America are canonically based in Rwanda; shall therefore remain a missionary out reach of Rwanda in America.? The Rev. Dr. Todd Hunter, leader of the Anglican Mission?s Western Initiative called Churches for the Sake of Others; the Rev. Canon Doc Loomis, Canon Missioner for the Anglican Mission; and the Rev. Silas TAK Yin Ng, Rector of Richmond Emmanuel, British Columbia, will be consecrated in September 2009. In presenting candidates to fellow bishops, the Rt. Rev. Charles H. Murphy, III, Anglican Mission Chairman, noted that these new bishops would enhance the expansion of the Anglican Mission, particularly in the western regions of the US and in Canada. The House of Bishops responded to the nominations with a unanimous election and the release of an official Communiqué announcing their decision. ?Once again, we are grateful for the consistent trust and support demonstrated by the Rwanda House of Bishops,? said Bishop Murphy. ?As the Anglican Mission grows and expands west of the Mississippi, additional bishops will assist us in our mission to reach those who do not yet know the saving power of Jesus Christ.? ?Todd, Doc and Silas are men of faith, vision and passion, and they also have a strong track record of proven results,? Bishop Murphy added. ?I have no doubt that each will add unique gifts to the Council of Bishops and will work effectively to expand the Kingdom of God in our missionary movement.? The Anglican Mission?s Council of Bishops is charged with providing oversight to clergy, congregations and Mission Networks; casting the ?big picture? vision for the Anglican Mission; and ensuring theological alignment with historic Christianity as received by the one holy catholic and apostolic Church. The work of the Council of Bishops represents a careful balance of oversight between ?what already is? within the Mission, and an ongoing commitment to both envision and implement ?what is yet to be.? The bishops-elect will be consecrated in September, and specific details will be announced when arrangements are finalized. -------------- section suivante -------------- Une pièce jointe HTML a été nettoyée... Canon Doc Loomis David Loomis, affectionately known as Doc, has served as Canon Missioner for the Anglican Mission since September 2007. In that capacity as well as serving as the Network Leader of the Heart of North America (HONA) Network, Doc is involved with planting new churches, raising up leaders and opening new territory for the Kingdom in the US and Canada. Doc also serves as Chairman for the Anglican Church in North America ?s (ACNA) Committee on Mission and teaches church planting at Gordon Conwell Seminary in Massachusetts. A significant number of new churches and missions have been planted under Doc?s leadership during the last four years. Beginning with a single Northeast Ohio Congregation, three Networks have been birthed. Now, with the partnership of the Midwest Network, there are four Networks in one region. The region, called The Heart of North America, includes The Lighthouse, River of Life, CrossRoads (replacing HONA as a Network moniker) and the Midwest. Doc also helps provide oversight for churches in Ontario and Quebec. Doc was traine d and licensed in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he served as pastor from 1981 - 1997. From 1997 until 2003, he worked with two church plants in Ohio as an independent Christian church planter. In 2003, Doc began working with orthodox Anglicans in Ohio and ultimately accepted a call as pastor of an emerging church in northeast Ohio. This congregation, Holy Trinity, eventually affiliated with the Anglican Mission, leading to Doc?s ordination by Bishop Barnum in 2004. While serving this parish, Doc was called to birth a family of 8 churches in the surrounding area. Doc holds Masters and Doctoral degrees in ministry. He is married to Ellen, who ministers mightily as a worship leader, and the couple resides in Medina, O hio. The Loomis? have four grown Christian children, ages 19 to 33, and four grandchildren. The Rev. Silas TAK Yin Ng Silas Ng was born in Hong Kong and is the Rector of Richmond Emmanuel Church in British Columbia, a church planted in 1996 and is now a thriving congregation of over 400. Silas also serves as the Network Leader and principal missionary of the Asian Initiative (AI), a targeted ministry designed to respond to immigration from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines to North America. Under Silas? leadership, AI seeks to respond to the challenges presented by a rich cultural diversity present across the US and Canada and to address the tensions and opportunities associated with such cross-cultural mission. Launched in December 2007, AI has become a visible and mission-oriented community, providing a significant witness of the love of Christ to Asians while planting congregations within Asian communities in North America. In addition to the strong presence of Richmond Emmanuel Church in the Vancouver area, AI is planting a daughter church of Richmond in Toronto ? Toronto Emmanuel Church. This emerging work will ultimately makes its home as part of a major development project that includes two life lease apartment buildings for seniors, a community center and a 300 seat church. This creative plan places Toronto Emmanuel in the center of the Asian community which offers a multitude of ministry opportunities. Silas holds a Bachelor?s Degree from the Music Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and received his Masters in Divinity from Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary, Wisconsin in 1987. He was ordained to the priesthood by the Rt. Rev. Peter Kwong, Bishop of the Diocese of Hong Kong in 1988. Silas is currently participating in a Doctor of Ministry program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California and expects to complete the degree in May 2011. He and his wife Michelle have two sons, Ignatius and Athanasius. -------------- section suivante -------------- Une pièce jointe HTML a été nettoyée...
