We are number 3 in the countdown.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 15px;">Please share it with others. Defenders around the world need your support -- and publicizing their work plays a vital role.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 15px;">Starting today, IBJ is launching a campaign to rally 108,000 individuals, called "Justice Warriors", to contribute to our mission to end torture. While the campaign will run for 18 months, my hope is that we can reach 10,800 before the close of 2011. I am kicking it off in this moment by making a $10,000 donation because I know that this amount can support a courageous lawyer working in a Cambodian province for an entire year. Her work in building the infrastructure of the provincial legal system will protect generations to come.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 15px;">Assistance can take any form, from rights-awareness campaigns to financial contributions (where, frankly, even donations as modest as $25 are very important to helping us do our work). What is important is that we all do whatever our part is to contribute to the greater whole.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 15px;">Let me explain why this is so critical. I spoke recently with Harshi Perera, a defender in Sri Lanka. I was curious about three kids. A 36-year-old woman named Somawathi was separated from her children when she was detained on allegations of drug possession. She spent nine years in prison simply awaiting a trial. Harshi, an IBJ JusticeMaker, learned about her plight and took the case. Within three months, Somawathi was released. Had she located her kids whom she had lost contact with while in prison? I could feel Harshi's smile over the phone as she exclaimed: "Yes!" For the first time in a decade, the family will celebrate the New Year together."</p><p style="margin-bottom: 15px;">One by one, from many different places, we have come together in support of courageous defenders throughout the world who protect the lives of ordinary people. I want to thank you for supporting International Bridges to Justice. After a decade of working together, our efforts to implement systematic access to counsel throughout the world have begun to take root.</p><p style="margin-bottom: 15px;">I wish you all the best in this holiday season filled with a faith in new possibilities.
