Diocesan Officials to Share Vision for the Future of the Church in Haiti

August 1, 2010 - Bishop Pierre W. Whalon, Bishop-in-Charge of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches, is visiting Haiti this week. There, he is participating in meetings with Bishop Jean Zaché Duracin and diocesan officials concerning the Church in Haiti’s vision for the future. This is Bishop Whalon’s second trip to Haiti since the earthquake this winter. He joins Margereth Crosnier de Bellaistre of the Office of the Treasurer of the Episcopal Church Center, who is working with Bishop Duracin and his people to examine the budget for the year, and to assess the financial needs, both now and in the future.

The Bishop compares the situation now to what he experienced in March. “There is a significant change from my previous visit. I was pleased to see that, near the former Cathedral, the Church has managed to put together some makeshift classrooms. It is very encouraging to see that some children are now back in school.”

Today, the diocese continues the difficult task of developing its vision for reconstruction. “The Diocese of Haiti was the leading light of that nation,” said Bishop Whalon in an earlier communiqué. “Now, it is to be the work of the entire Episcopal Church to support the church in Haiti, as partners dedicated to the task of rebuilding the Haitian infrastructure, and of course, of our Episcopal network of schools, hospitals and churches.”

In response to the earthquake, the Convocation in Europe has created the organization “Partners with Haiti,” an effort to assist the people of the Diocese of Haiti. Members of the Convocation, along with other members of Province-II of the Episcopal Church, will work together to raise funds for specific projects and help to connect people in the Episcopal Church and beyond, who desire to participate in the rebuilding of the church there.
Parishioners and staff at the American Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity in Paris will receive Bishop Duracin in early September when he travels there with members of the Anglican Communion Compass Rose Society. Special prayers will be offered for the ministries of the Bishop and his staff, for the community of the former Cathédrale Sainte Trinité in Port-au-Prince, and for the Haitian people.
